Intermediate Boys Hockey

The Ballarat High School intermediate boy’s hockey team had a straight run to the State Finals – without playing a match. Not really the best preparation for a State tournament!

Training was run each week in sun but mainly rain, often after a pre-training snack of donuts and lamingtons! Most of the boys made it to training every week – demonstrating their commitment to the team and competition. The boys (from Years 7-10) were a mixture of a few regular players and many who wanted to try the sport.

After a nervous bus trip down, we played Melbourne High School – ending up with a 2-all draw. This was great for the confidence of the team. The next match was a 0-5 loss, to Hume Anglican College. (They had 2 Vic State players and all the others were “old hands.’)

In the third and final match – after a short stoppage due to rain and lighting, the team defeated Orbost Secondary College 3-1. This saw BHS in equal second to Melbourne High on points, but third overall in the pool on a goal difference count back.

This was a very positive experience for the team who were placed 5th overall in the State.

Thanks to Zali Pearce who acted as assistant coach throughout training and on the day.
