Prep - 2 Sleep Over

A big thank you to staff and parents for making the Prep – 2 sleepover such a successful event. It was terrific to see how excited (with a mixture of nerves in there) students were about sleeping over at school. For many students, it was their first overnight experience away from home however thanks to your encouragement and support, all students stayed the night and were so proud of themselves. The Prep-2 sleepover is a great initiative in giving students the opportunity to be ‘camp ready’ when in Grade 3 and above.

All activities and experiences are constructed to be similar to real school camp experiences however having familiarity and knowing, we are not far from home. Students started off the night with a BBQ, followed by a disco, camp fire (marshmallows toasting of course), a night walk and movie before bed. The next day, students were treated to a delicious breakfast of scrambled eggs, sausages, toast and pancakes. After our big breakfast, a bush walk down to the tadpole pond was in order followed by fun games and more delicious food and treats.

I hope all students came home with amazing stories Friday afternoon and were able to share with you the great fun that we all had. I am sure everyone was in bed early Friday night! Please see the link below to some great photos that were taken during the duration of the sleepover.

Scotsburn Assembly This Friday

With quite a few events on each Friday this term so far, it has been difficult to get us all together for a Campus Assembly. Even though SC3 will be away again at Sovereign Hill this Friday, we will hold an Assembly at 9am for SC1 and SC2 and families. This will be nice to present some award winners and celebrate the great events that have taken place recently.

With smaller numbers and the shed going through a bit of a facelift, we will hold this in SC1 at 9am.

Shade Sails Installation

Last week we received the news that the shade sails would be installed over the next few weeks covering our concrete area, which is fantastic news. On Monday this week works began, however the rain halted any concrete work until Friday. Unfortunately this means we have some roped off areas for the week, however with the wet weather it might not pose too much of an inconvenience. The sails will look amazing in a few weeks when installed!

Hats

A reminder that Term 4 is a mandatory hat term. Children not wearing hats in the yard, will need to sit in the shade.

Transition Mornings

This Wednesday we have our last transition morning. SC1 students have just loved welcoming in our new students and sharing their classroom and school experiences with everyone. It is great to see how nurturing and caring our students are. I am sure these positive experiences will ensure a happy and smooth transition for next year.

SC1 Learning Snapshot

Week 3 was certainly busy! Despite the busyness, students have been working extremely hard and showcasing great learning. In Reading, we are putting together all the reading strategies that we are familiar with to ensure we are doing our best. We are exploring community helpers through our read-aloud each morning. In Writing, students are writing a narrative based around an ‘emergency’. We can’t wait to share these with you towards the end of the term. Measurement has still been a big focus in Maths. Last week we finished exploring length with a lesson spent measuring how tall we are and then arranging our height from smallest to tallest in the class. The end of the week saw us exploring Capacity. During the next 4 weeks, there will be lots of assessments taking place as we begin to gather more data and information ready for report writing. This is a great time to share and celebrate with the students all the wonderful learning that has taken place this semester.

Please ensure reader pouches are sent to school each day, along with your child’s diary and their ‘star words’. Our class newsletter was sent home Friday as well as a digital version was made available on Compass. As always, if you have any questions, please contact me.

SC2 Learning Snapshot

The Grade 2, SC2 students had a fantastic night on Thursday at the Prep-2 sleepover followed by a relaxing fun Friday. They danced, walked, cooked and slept the night away followed by a tadpole walk, games and a movie and popcorn on Friday. It was wonderful to see all of the kids laughing and having fun.

In Reading, the students have been listening to ‘The One and only Ivan’ and using a range of comprehension strategies including literal and inferred meaning. To support student’s understanding of the vocabulary found in the text, students have been honing in on their dictionary skills and discussing synonyms for certain words.

Writing this week has seen students continue to get a better understanding of the structures and features of procedural texts. They have been using a checklist to ensure that they have included the different elements and up levelled and improved their procedural writing ready to publish.

We have continued to look at ‘Time’ this week matching analogue, digital and worded times using Lego blocks, read movie timetables to discover how much time had lapsed and solved problems that required students to convert times into 24hour time.

As part of our celebration inquiry, this week students have been investigating Diwali - India’s ‘Festival of Light’. Students then created lanterns and rangoli designs.

SC3 Learning Snapshot

Last week, with the help of Liz and Em (who lives in Skipton and has been assisting with the recovery efforts), SC3 decided that it was a wonderful opportunity to show our support to a community fighting the floods by making cards of support. As a class, we discussed empathy and ‘putting ourselves in other people’s shoes’. Students then made a big effort to create thoughtful and personal messages, which were then read out in front of the class. We were amazed at how touching and thoughtful each message was. Em collected the cards on Friday to deliver to a Skipton town meeting on Saturday. This was a wonderfully thoughtful activity to do and the students embraced it wholeheartedly.

In Maths this week, SC3 have continued to develop their multiplication number skills through regular fluency activities. This week students are playing “Real Estate Wars”, where to be successful they need to calculate multiplication equations and then complete the array on a grid to own that piece of “real estate”. Students have also been looking at units of measurement and how to measure length in different ways.

It was amazing last week to finally be able to complete some Specialist sessions out in some sun! Thanks Mrs Micallef for the fun sessions!

Sovereign Hill Excursion Information

SC3’s excursion to Sovereign Hill is on this Thursday and Friday, departing from and returning to the Buninyong Campus. To ensure that students are able to make the most of this immersion experience, please see some important information below:

Costume: By participating in this experience your child will become a part of the Sovereign Hill Museum and so will need to look, (and play) the part. We will provide them with an authentic, historical costume to wear during the program.

Shoes – plain black or brown leather-style, preferably no zips (if you don’t have any of these, please speak to Mr Morgan prior to Thursday. Sovereign Hill does have some pairs available to borrow on the day, and we definitely don’t want you going out buying new shoes just for this excursion).
Long socks - plain white, black or grey (no logos/patterns )
Plain white/cream t-shirts, singlets or thermals to wear underneath the costume for warmth in the cooler months.
Girls must have their hair parted in the centre and tied in two plaits with plain hair ties or ribbons. Girls with short hair will be provided with a day cap.

Lunch: no modern packaging, a brown paper bag or wrapped in a tea towel. (Note: we suggest fruit is the best option). No water bottles permitted in costume, drinking taps are available.

School “Fees”: On Day two of the program, students are encouraged to bring ‘payment’ for their lessons to the value of 2 shillings. This can be provided in a number of formats such as a gift that reflects parental occupations or a written note from mama or papa explaining why fees cannot be paid but promising a service or gift in lieu of payment. In character, each student has the opportunity to embellish their story and is invited to “pay their fees to sir or ma’am” in front of the class. This is a fun and entertaining chance for individuals to showcase their dramatisation skills, we encourage creativity and imagination. See the image below for a few fun ideas!

A separate letter will be sent home with students this week, further explaining the details for the two days. We will all meet at the Buninyong campus at 8.45am on both Thursday and Friday, with pick ups also at Buninyong. We all can’t wait for this amazing experience!

Specialist News

Japanese Day: Nihon Matsuri (Japanese festival day) is coming up on November 4th. Please start to have a think now about your children's costumes - they can be anything which is at all related to Japanese culture eg anime characters, Karate uniform, red and white colours to represent the flag, kimonos etc etc. Come and chat to me at the gate after school on Tuesday or Wednesday if you need ideas! It might be possible to coordinate your Japanese Day costume with Halloween trick or treating if this is something your family usually participates in, to save some time and money!
