Food Technology

I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase ‘I don’t like that’ or ‘I’m not trying that’ and this is something I hear everyday as a food tech teacher. This results in many, if not most, of my students not meeting the recommended serving of vegetables every day, alongside most Australians.

Year 09 students were fully immersed in Nutrition Australia’s Try for 5 campaign. This campaign encourages the consumption of 5 vegetables every day. Through this experience students engaged with industry professionals including Nutrition Australia, nutritionists and dieticians as well as members of Simplot and Flavourite who produce and manufacture snacking vegetables.

Students participated in creating a nourish bowl filled with cauliflower rice, tofu, carrots, corn, beans, chickpeas and a number of other vegetables. They were also asked to guess what was in an array of smoothies. Students were surprised with the great flavour and the number of hidden vegetables in these smoothies.

Overall, students left the session with newly acquired knowledge and understanding of just how simple it can be to meet recommendations and with the skills and resources to replicate what was produced in class as well as the ability to educate family and friends.
