Learning and Teaching News
Welcome back to Term 3. We hope you enjoyed a break from school routines over the holidays.
Thank you for engaging with us to participate in Learning Conversations at the end of Term Two.
This is an important part of supporting each student in their learning and development and makes their next steps in learning known and visible for all.
St Martin de Porres is a Visible learning school.
Visible Learners are students who can:
- Articulate what they are learning
- Explain the next steps in their learning
- Set learning goals
- See errors as opportunities for further learning
- Know what to do when they are stuck
- Seek feedback
As a school, we implement evidence based, high impact learning and teaching strategies based on the most important characteristics of learning success.
At St Martin’s you will hear the L word (learning) everywhere; learning intentions, learning conversations, learning success.
We are committed to maximizing learning and ensuring learners can articulate what they are learning and why they are learning what they are learning.
We aim to ensure learners know what is needed in a task to make them successful. This is the reason we teach using learning intentions and success criteria.
Families can support their child/ren in this joint enterprise by asking them:
- What did you learn at school today? (rather than what did you do?)
- How did you learn?
- Were you successful - how do you know?
- What do I need to do/know next?
Term Three Inquiry units are as follows:
Prep
We are sensational scientists
How can I use my senses to explore and learn about change?
An inquiry into using our senses to explore and learn about change in the world around us. Students will act as scientists using special tools to discover how things look, sound, smell, taste and feel.
Year One/Two
Change detectives
How and why do things change?
Like magic, materials can transform and change, turning simple things into something new and strange!
Year Three/Four
Smooth Moves
How do forces affect the way things move?
An Inquiry into force and motion and how they shape various aspects of our lives.
Year Five/Six
How does science impact our lives?
Our world is shaped by natural processes and human interactions, and understanding its elements helps us make sense of our surroundings. We can use science ideas to explain these processes.
