Jess Trost and Dave Wierenga
So who is in the Primary School?
In this edition of The View, we would like to introduce you to two staff members on the Primary campus - Mrs Jess Trost, the Primary Dance teacher, and Mr Dave Wierenga, our Year 6 White teacher, Head of Department - Technologies & VET and Key Teacher - Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Perspectives.
Hi my name is Jess Trost
I am the Primary Dance teacher at Mount Carmel College.
I have been dancing for the past 32 years and I own a non-competitive dance studio called Dance Culture Co. in North Hobart and Byron Bay, NSW. I love to dance and I believe it’s my purpose in life to bring dance to as many people as I can, whilst I’m gifted a life here on earth.
What is your favourite colour?
My favourite colour is purple.
What is your favourite movie/song/book?
My favourite artist is PINK.
Are you a sweet tooth or a savoury person?
I am both! I eat anything!!
How do you relax and unwind?
Walking the beach.
When was the last time you smiled or had a big belly laugh?
Today! (did I mention I run a dance school?... Kids are funny!!)
What are you most looking forward to this year?
Arts Evening – watching the students perform.
What quote, line from a song or motto sums you up?
My fav saying is “This too shall pass”… Both good and bad – a timely reminder that we are only here for a short time – so make the most of it!
Anything else you think you need to name up.
Peace!
I have worked as a teacher since 2009 (following in my mum's footsteps) but hope to remain a learner my whole life. I had the privilege of spending seven years in mbantua (Alice Springs) on arrernte country, working with First Nations students from around northern and central Australia.
In 2016, I moved back home to nipaluna (Hobart) to work at Mount Carmel. I love being back in lutruwita/Tasmania on muwinina country, on the shores of timtumili minanya (Derwent River) and in the shadow of kunanyi (Mt Wellington).
I have a number of roles at Mount Carmel in 2023: Teacher (Year 6 White); Head of Technologies (K-10) and VET; and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Key Teacher (K-6). In all these roles, I have the privilege of being involved with students and teachers across the College, learning, designing, and creating things together in community, seeking to be of benefit in whatever we do. Life is busy, but good.
What is your favourite colour?
Any combination of Red, White, and Black (Go Saints!)
What is your favourite movie/song/book?
Lord of the Rings, probably.
Are you a sweet tooth or a savoury person?
Savoury. Love a cheeky sausage roll from Banjos.
How do you relax and unwind?
Gardening. Listening to music from my record collection. Playing FIFA.
When was the last time you smiled or had a big belly laugh?
Watching "Have You Been Paying Attention?" on TV earlier in the week
What are you most looking forward to this year?
The Year 6 Canberra Trip. It will be nice to get back to the Nation's Capital.
