VICTORIAN STATE MUSIC FESTIVAL

Huge congratulations to both the Wind Symphony and the Ovenden Band who performed Tuesday 22 August at Hawthorn Arts Centre. Wind Symphony, conducted by Tracy Videon, attained a silver placing in a very tight competition group. Well done! Ovenden Band, conducted by James Morrissey, attained a Bronze placing and we are incredibly proud of the musicianship that they displayed throughout the performance.

Thank you to Tracy Videon for organising the event, and to Dmitry Serebrianik, Karen Nansen and Clare Bugeja for their attendance.

GIGS ON THE GREEN

Congratulations to all the Unit 4 Music students who performed a selection of their End of Year Recital program to a warm and welcoming crowd in the Theatre on both Wednesday 23 August and Thursday 24 August. Thank you to Andrew Albanis for his work with the Year 12 students, and for his ongoing development of the Gigs on the Green concert series.

WINTER CONCERT

Thank you to all students, staff and parents who took part in the 2023 Winter Concert held on Wednesday 30 August at Robert Blackwood Hall, Monash University.

It was an outstanding display of the developing musicianship and performance technique that students are building throughout the year. We are incredibly grateful to the staff at Monash University for their support of this event. Thank you to all the ensemble directors for their amazing work in building the capacity of their students at this time.

Thank you to the amazing backstage students, who were able to perform their task in such a timely manner. Thank you to all the staff who attended the evening concert, working with students on developing their audience skills in a formal setting. A video of this performance will be made available early in term 4.

YEARS 11 & 12 THEATRE STUDIES EXCURSION

The Years 11 and 12 Theatre Studies students went on an excursion last week to see the play Miss Peony to support their studies. Both classes will complete an analytical SAC in response to the performance in the coming weeks. Here are some reflections from Year 12 student Aziz Sharipov:

Theatre Studies Teacher

On Wednesday 16 August, the Years 11 and Year 12 Theatre classes went to watch the glamorous comedy Miss Peony written by Michelle Law and performed at the Arts Centre Melbourne. Miss Peony had a huge focus on language, being the first of its kind utilising a trilingual cast of languages including English, Cantonese and Mandarin (with surtitles present above the stage throughout the entire performance) leading to an extremely inclusive and unique experience for multilingual individuals within our class and the general public.

Miss Peony additionally had the entire audience enchanted, crying from laughter: it was a truly unforgettable experience. Finally, I would like to give a special mention to the actress Mabel Li, who played the character "Sabrina,” for being an unbelievably memorable part of the show. The two classes would be glad to relive her performance again.
