People playing. People learning. People sharing. People smiling. These were the integral features of the images shared with our community this afternoon. Not by acute and strategic design, rather, these images were selected to authentically portray what truly matters in a faith and learning community – people. In fact, it’s all that really matters. Full stop.
Today’s end of term liturgy was a ritual of ‘thanksgiving’ for all that has been gifted to us – our opportunities, our peers, our friends, our mentors. The ritual of “thanksgiving” is a common experience that has its roots in both religious and secular realms. Whether it be before a meal, a holiday tradition day or during a Eucharistic celebration, consciously taking time to give thanks for the gifts that we receive brings us closer to appreciating the wonderful gift of life.
Exercises of gratitude are being prescribed across the globe more than ever. These exercises are designed to train our brains to be more hope-filled, future-focused and optimistic. These very same exercises have long been central to our faith experiences which are integrated into the daily life at school and in formative experiences such as liturgies and retreats. Some may call it “reflection” or “meditation” or “prayer”. Through these exercises, we often bring to mind people rather than things.
Give it a go. Close your eyes and think of a time when you were happy. Completely content for a moment in time. Let this wash over you for 30sec and focus on that moment…….. What comes to mind?
Without fail people come to mind. Well, that’s my experience with the countless young people who have been guided through this process. I reckon, us big kids are no different. Our friends and family arise in our minds when we reflect on moments of happiness. For this, we should be grateful. For this, we should give thanks.
As we embark on school holiday time with friends and family, may we give thanks for all we have been gifted, especially the special people in our lives.
May we be thankful for the many friendships we have made and for the opportunities provided for each of us to learn, play and grow.
May we be considerate and helpful members of our family so that we may return to Term 3 refreshed and ready for a new term together as a Marist Family.
