Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport
Over the past week, it was great to see so many boys out trialling for our Term 3 team sports of tennis, basketball and rugby league. All information pertaining to these Term 3 sports can be found on the College App. The nature of these sports in the AIC competition is that there are going to be disappointed boys, who miss out. This is unavoidable as the competition dictates how many teams we can enter. At Marist we are committed to providing sport to boys as we know the benefits of being active for boys’ general wellbeing, both physical and mental. We are working on providing internal basketball and touch competitions for boys who miss out on playing an AIC sport next term. Once the trials settle and teams are finalised, we will communicate through the newsletter and the college app details of how to register and participate in these competitions.
Our track and field season commenced last Friday with the House Athletics Carnival which was a great day of house competition, games and competitive track and field. A renewed sense of house spirit and healthy rivalry in both the championship and novelty events meant a great day was enjoyed by all. Thank you to Mr Richard Graham and Mr Mitch Reid for your management of this event. Countless hours of preparation and organisation behind the scenes by both of you went into making this a success. Thank you also to Mr Rob Martin and many of the Marist Track and Field coaches for your professionalism and commitment to the events, and the Heads of House and pastoral team for your involvement on the day in supporting the boys.
Andrew Ward - Director of Tennis
I would like to start by thanking all students and parents for your dedicated efforts over the trial period. We will release training schedules for Term 3 soon.

Inter-House Track and Field Carnival
Last Friday was the College’s Inter-House Track and Field Carnival. This year's event was a fantastic day and a resounding testament to the power of participation and enjoyment of our students.
I would like to thank the students for embracing the carnival with such enthusiasm and sportsmanship. Their commitment to giving their best, cheering for their fellow Housemates, and displaying respect for all participants created a wonderful atmosphere. I commend the students for their positive mindset and willingness to step out of their comfort zones.
At the heart of this carnival was the spirit of participation and enjoyment. The Championship and novelty events were designed to ensure that every student had the opportunity to get involved and contribute to their House's success.
I extend my sincere appreciation to the dedicated staff members who poured their energy and support into making this carnival a resounding success. Whether it was coordinating the activities, or providing guidance and encouragement to the students, our staff demonstrated their dedication to fostering a positive and engaging experience for all involved. I would like to thank them for their tireless efforts throughout the day.
Congratulations to Gilroy House for emerging as the winner of the 2023 Inter-House Track and Field Carnival. Their strong and consistent performances and unwavering team spirit helped them hold off the competition with a 20-point win over second-place Ridley. Congratulations to all the other Houses for their spirited participation and for contributing to the overall success of the carnival.

That’s A Wrap
As I reflect on an extraordinary season of rugby union here at the College, I would like to take this opportunity to celebrate the collective 2023 campaign achievements of our students, coordinators, coaches, and supporters.
Thanks to the aligned and integrated approach, the season was filled with enjoyment, stimulation, and healthy competition. Over the course of the AIC season, our rugby program showcased its strength by producing 40 teams across all Year levels. In seven weeks of rugby union, our students demonstrated not only their exceptional skills but also their commitment to playing the game in the right spirit.
The enjoyment and enthusiasm displayed by our players on and off the field was truly infectious. The camaraderie and sportsmanship the students exhibited towards their teammates created an environment that fostered personal growth, resilience, and lifelong friendships. The memories forged throughout this season will undoubtedly leave a positive mark on our students as they move forward.
One of the defining features of this season was our commitment to ensuring every student had the opportunity to play a minimum of 50 minutes of rugby each weekend. The dedication to finding games for our students is a testament to our program's values and placing every student at the centre of the program.
I extend our sincerest gratitude to our dedicated coordinators, coaches and support staff who have guided, mentored, and nurtured the students every step of the way. Your commitment, and endless hours of preparation have been instrumental in our teams’ development and success. Your guidance extends beyond the field, shaping our students into well-rounded individuals and true Marist men. Your tireless efforts have left an indelible mark on our rugby program, and we are indebted to you for your invaluable contributions.
I would also like to express my appreciation to all our stakeholders, including parents, volunteers, and administrators, who have played an integral role in ensuring the smooth running of our rugby program.
First and foremost, I would like to extend my deepest appreciation to the Health Centre and medical teams. Your tireless efforts, high level of expertise, and attention to our students ensured our boys were always well cared for. In what is an already challenging role, your determination and willingness to keep driving higher standards is a testament to all of you who work here at the College.
To our outstanding marketing team. Through your creativity, dedication, and unwavering commitment, you created an exceptional social media platform that showcased our participation, enjoyment, and achievements throughout the season. We are incredibly grateful for your tireless efforts in promoting our students and elevating the profile of our entire rugby union program.
Recognition must go to our groundsmen who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to prepare the best playing fields each weekend. Rain or shine, they ensured that our fields were immaculate, providing our students with a safe and enjoyable environment to showcase their skills. We are indebted to them for their exceptional efforts in maintaining our sporting facilities.
To the dedicated canteen staff, we appreciate your unwavering commitment and the important role you play in creating a welcoming and inclusive environment. Your friendly smiles and efficient service added to the vibrant atmosphere and added to the overall game-day experience here at the College.
A special mention goes to Mr Reid at the sports administration office. His meticulous planning, organisational skills, and dedication to ensuring that every student played a minimum of 50 minutes of rugby each weekend were invaluable. We express our sincere gratitude to him for his dedication and the countless hours he invested in organising the fixtures and ensuring a positive experience for all involved.
