THE ARTS

News from Samantha Olding

Head of Arts

Our Year 10s have begun selecting senior subjects for 2024, a big step forward towards meeting goals and dreams. Therefore, if parents have any questions or would like clarification on any of the Arts subjects on offer, please contact our Arts staff. We are fortunate to have some of the best specialist teachers in not only the region but in the state. Academically, the arts are formidable subjects, socially, the arts enable students to learn through perspectives, doing and problem-solving – all key components to exploring and enabling skill and knowledge development. The Arts Department at Saints wishes all Year 10s the best with subject selection.

Our School Shorts In-house Film Competition is heading into the final stages. Mr McCarthy reminds boys who have entered, that an extension has been granted. Films (and the 100 word synopses) will be due in WEEK 4 to Mr McCarthy. Any group wishing to submit their completed film before then is welcome to do so.

Indigenous Art Fair

Visual Art students from Years 9 to12 recently attended the 14th Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) at the reopened Convention Centre. Students viewed work from local and regional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, including lino prints from Saints Old Boy, Danny O'Shea.

Work featured included painting, ceramics, printmaking, mixed media sculpture and photography. Some exhibiting artists were available to speak with the boys, which was a fantastic learning opportunity. Local dance troupes performed and there were live demonstrations of weaving which also immersed the students.

Daniel Leibinger of Year 12 Visual Art in Practice said, "The excursion to CIAF was a culturally enriching experience and has certainly given us ideas to try out and artists to research."
