Year 9 Italian Term 2: ‘Il Cibo’Food, Glorious Food!

To launch our Year 9 unit on Italian food explored through the regions of Italy, we started off with a superbly sweet, traditional Italian breakfast.

Work tables were transformed into serveries for freshly baked chocolate ‘brioche’ and crispy ‘cornetti’ (croissants), backed up by 'crostata' (homebaked jam tart), 'fette biscottate' (crispy toast biscuits) with jam and the famous 'Pan di Stelle' featherweight, crunchy, semi sweet chocolate flavoured biscuits with their characteristic sprinkling of crisp white stars.

Sipping on ‘succo di pesca’ (peach juice) and litres of ‘acqua’ (water), the breakfast sugar rush was boosted by a few lively rounds of Italian breakfast food Tombola (Bingo) and a jumbo Italian food Kahoot.

Then after weeks of exploring a range of Italian regional specialty dishes online, chatting with Prof Varra about Calabrian and Sicilian specialties, and writing about their favourite Italian nonnas’ delicious family recipes, the students tried some of Italy’s signature savoury and sweet snack foods for themselves to toast the end of the unit.

Handpicked by Prof Varra, our pre-recess feast of savoury snack foods came to life through the Italian delicacies of prosciutto, mortadella, grissini, marinated olives, stracciatella spread on Pane di Casa, cherry tomatoes paired with bocconcini cheese, asiago cheese bites, grilled capsicum and artichokes.

Something sweet followed in the form of chocolate or vanilla cannoli accompanied by lemon, raspberry and chocolate gelato.

Deliziosoooooooo!

That’s a wrap for our Year 9 Italian regional food unit. Next, we have our eyes on the prize of the Italian Week pizza, gelato and games fiesta in Term 3.

Wood Technology

The Middle School Wood Technology students have been busy this semester and have designed and created some amazing pieces.

The Year 9 students designed and produced a stool project.

And the Year 10 students designed a coffee table or shoe rack as their major project.
