Children's Centre

 (Preschool and Child Care)

Our focus book for the past few weeks has been Handa’s Surprise by Eileen Browne. It tells the story of Handa who wants to take a present of fruit to her friend Akeyo to surprise her.

On the way different animals can't resist helping themselves to the fruit in Handa's basket until eventually there is no fruit left!

The children have learnt some new focus words from the text- surprise, balance, delicious, village.

To support the development of these new words in our small groups- the children enjoyed choosing a surprise object from the box during group time, balancing beanbags on their heads like Handa balanced the fruit basket on her head, built a village using blocks and even tasted some of the delicious fruit featured in the story. The children have also enjoyed doing some observational artwork of the fruit and animals in the story.

Ask your children which fruit they liked best? Mango, pineapple, passionfruit, banana, guava, avocado, tangerine.

The children have shown interest in sea animals so there have lots of learning experiences to support children with these interests including water play with sea animals, drawing sea creatures, and reading fishing magazines.

The preschool children acknowledged Naidoc week by creating shared artworks featuring the Aboriginal colours and Aboriginal stories and songs were also shared with the children.
