Eisteddfod Success

On Thursday May 31, dance students from Years 7 to Year 11 at Cowra High School competed in the Cowra Eisteddfod.  They were competing in three sections – Secondary School Years 7-10 Dance, Secondary School Years 11 and 12 Dance, Secondary School Open Dance.  There were 16 students involved in the first section and they danced to the song ‘Begging for Thread’.  The dancers were very polished and synchronized and they were awarded First Place.

In the second section our Year 11 Dance students competed and they had choreographed a dance to the piece ‘In this Shirt’.  It was a very strong dance displaying controlled movement and grace and they also received First Place.

Our last group had 21 eager students waiting to take to the stage.  They showed their popping and locking hip-hop skills to the mash up of ‘Bye Remix and Anything’  and were rewarded with a Highly Commended.

Congratulations to all of the students involved  (Nicola Anslow, Kiera Buckley, Emma Clements, Jacqueline Long, Mollie Thompson, Benson Sullivan, Amelia Clements, Chloee Funnell, Lucy Murray, Kimball Sullivan, Nashwa Bakini, Zoe Budge, Amy Gruessing, Janet Krause, Lowanna Murray, Emma Rowston, Bella Pangas, Millie Casey, Brigette Healy, Victoria King, Erika Sullivan, Maisie Thompson) and a very big thank you to Mrs Buckley for all of her hard work and to Mrs Williams for her assistance in rehearsing and driving the bus.

Vocal Duo Success

Congratulations to Madeline Cooper and Emily Reynolds of Yr.11 on their recent success at the Cowra Eisteddfod. I was very privileged to be able to play violin with them in their beautiful acoustic rendition of ‘Riptide’ by Vance Joy.

Music Success

On Wednesday June 6 Cowra High music students competed at the Cowra Eisteddfod.   They were competing in two sections – Open Pop/ Jazz Band and the Open Instrumental Ensemble.  The Year 11 Music class was competing in the Open Pop/Jazz Band section and they had prepared two contrasting pieces ‘Heaven Is a Place on Earth’ by Belinda Carlisle (this is a favourite at morning muster) and ‘Like I’m Gonna Lose You’ by Meghan Trainor and John Legend.  We had Daniel Coghlan on drums, Jacob O’Shea on bass, Seth Webb and Mitchell Savell on electric guitar, Summer White on semi acoustic guitar, Leo Farrell on the Hammond keys and Emily Reynolds, Madeline Cooper and Lucy Jones singing lead and harmonies.  Mr Hughes had done a sterling job on coordinating these songs and of course he filled in on piano.  They sounded and looked awesome!  They were in a very competitive section and they received a Highly Commended.

Also competing on this day was a much smaller ensemble playing two classic Disney film tunes – ‘The Pirates of the Caribbean’ and ‘Under the Sea’.  These students had been rehearsing Tuesday morning for most of Terms 1 and 2 under the keen eye of Mr Hughes again.  They had a beautifully balanced sound and they played with great enthusiasm. Congratulations to Amelia Clements who played flute, Emma Clements and Kayla Hall who played clarinet, Katelyn Judd who played alto saxophone and Jade Blinman who played keyboard.  They were rewarded with a Highly Commended.

Thank you to Ms Burrell who played piano in rehearsals and tenor saxophone on the day and to Mr Hughes for all of his hard work in arranging, rehearsing and preparing the ensemble for this event.

Festival of Speech Debating

On Thursday May 31 three students competed in the 52nd Festival of Speech at Lithgow High School.  Our team of Hannah Reid, Ponie de Wet and Jacinta Blackburn won 2 out of their 3 debates but did not qualify to proceed to the final round.  Nonetheless this day was a great achievement for the relatively inexperienced debaters in a competition that had over 20 teams in it!  The day was great practise for these students who went on to debate against Camden High School.
