Community Planners

Year 8 students have been creating a large, environmentally friendly and self-sustaining island community.

In Maths, we have started a new topic focusing on Measurement. For this topic we are building a sustainable island for a community to live in. I am building an Orthodox Church to put on the island. Right now, I am busy planning what my building will look like. After drawing my blue prints, I will start measuring the area and perimeter of my building. I will then draw the net of the different shapes in my building, so I can develop it into a 3D model using paper and cardboard. If everything goes well, our little island community will have a church.

In Maths, our teachers have introduced a new topic of Measurement. We have been given an opportunity to choose a building and create it. Once we have created the blue print, we will then measure the perimeter, area and volume of the different shapes in our building. We can then be able to create a 3D model, and join it within the sustainable community.

The building that I have chosen to develop is a luxurious hotel. The hotel will be made up of four different buildings that have individual shapes. As part of my project, I need to learn how to calculate the area, perimeter and volume of these shapes. Furthermore, I also need to learn how to scale my buildings to later create a smaller 3D model. This is a great start to a new topic. I can’t wait to continue to build up on my math skills.

In Maths, we have started a new topic on Measurement, and we are using shapes to build a sustainable community. The building I am creating is a jail. I am using a variety of shapes such as rectangles, circles and squares. These different buildings will help house inmates and create different living areas for them. To complete this project I need to calculate the perimeter, area and volume of the different shapes my buildings has. I will then scale the building to build a smaller 3D version to add to the community. I enjoy working on this project because it’s very challenging, and I like how you are allowed to choose your own building.
