Looking to the Future

The School Captains, along with the rest of Year 9, spent Transition Week looking at a range educational pathways to shape their futures. Thomas, Grace, Naomi, Taneesha and Oscar (Sport Captain) explain:

On Monday (29th of May) the Year 9s participated in the Resume and Cover Letter Workshop. The students found job advertisements and practised writing cover letters and resumes for their chosen job. They were given a template and many of the Year 9s wrote superb resumes. They now have a resume they can adjust when getting a future job and have experience in writing cover letters to employers.

On Tuesday the Year 9s were lucky enough to have many guest speakers talk to them about their possible future career options. Some participated in a university workshop which was hands-on as well as theoretical. The workshop explained how you may get to university and how university will give you different opportunities in life. We also had a workshop from the Defence Force which included an opportunity for the students to listen to a veteran navy officer speak about life in the Navy and life beyond the Navy. There was also a Police Academy workshop where an active member of the Victoria Police spoke about the different positions you can undertake in the force. He spoke about opportunities you have in the police force and the training you may undergo. Other workshops included a health industries workshop, an auto apprenticeship workshop, a childcare workshop, a law careers workshop and many more.

On Wednesday the Year 9s chose to go to either Melbourne University, Northern College of the Arts and Technology (NCAT) or Peter Lalor Vocational College to see possible schooling options for the years to come. Students who went to Melbourne Uni got to look around the beautiful campus grounds and went to Melbourne Central for lunch. Students who went to NCAT got to have a look through the arts and technology buildings with a pit stop to Northland Shopping Center for lunch. Students who went to Peter Lalor got to look around the fantastic facilities and stopped at Epping Plaza for lunch.

On Thursday we had the fantastic opportunity to visit both RMIT and Melbourne Polytechnic. Both campuses where amazing and had fantastic facilities that no one thought could be so close to home. While at RMIT, we had a little introduction and a short history of the campus as well as a guided tour of the campus. At Melbourne Polytechnic we had a talk about career options available there. It was an amazing experience.

On Friday we visited La Trobe University. We had a brief presentation on the University and what they offer. Then we were off on our guided tour around the campus to see all of the facilities. After that we were allowed to roam around the campus to have a better look at their buildings and to have lunch in one of their many little cafes.

It was an amazing experience and we highly recommend it for future years!
