Virtual Maths Games Day

Yet another occasion for the school to be proud of our competitive students! On Tuesday 12th October, three teams (of 4 students) participated in the Virtual Maths Games Day for government schools in Victoria, organised by the Mathematics Association of Victoria in collaboration with Think Square.

The competition had four rounds of activities.  There were Maths puzzles, problem solving tasks, Maths games and a puzzle relay.

The teams were:

Team A: Louis MULET (7B), Nikhilesh NAMBIRAJAN (7B), Gautham SRIRAM (7H), Pranav SWARUP (7C)

Team B: David SCOTT (8B), Jamie KATIC (8B), Alex TARI (8B), Finn MALCOLM (8B)

Team C: Aksh AJBANI (8B), Adi REDDYCHARLA (8B), Zac HNATKO (8C), Ronith MASCARENHAS (8C)

I am so proud of all these three teams for demonstrating their collaborative skills, willingness to try, make mistakes and succeed in their learning journey. I was feeling proud of them for their participation and doing their best in the competition, and when they were announcing the winners at the end of the day I was so elated to hear that two of these teams won first and second prizes in the competition.  This was the icing on the cake!  Team C won the first prize and Team B came second. To me, all three teams are winners!

I would like to thank Mr Owen and Mr Cameron for organising these teams and Mr Owen for also supervising them on the day!

Here is what some of them said about their experience:

Participating in the Maths Games Day has become one of the highlights of the year for me. Getting to spend the day working on fun maths questions with my group was so enjoyable. The games we played during the day were all very challenging and required a lot of thinking. I would recommend anyone who has a passion for mathematics to participate in this games day next year.

On Tuesday 12th October, I participated in the Maths Games Day in a team of four. This Maths Games Day was a very different experience, in a good way of course. I had so much fun working in a team with people I haven't worked with before because this gives me a chance to learn how to quickly adapt to the different thought processes the group can have leading us to first place! Overall the experience was very exciting and I am definitely looking forward to participating again next year

It was a very different experience solving problems and puzzles with people I haven't worked with before because everyone had their own thoughts on how to approach some questions. Though, we started understanding how each of us thought with the help of teamwork. I learnt that speaking plays a really big role in teamwork, especially in team maths. Luckily, what we were saying made sense to each other and we were working pretty well. I also learnt how we have to accept what we've done. We only ended up answering 4 out of 8 questions in the first round, but instead of thinking about that, we moved on and accepted it. This acceptance allowed us to answer 18 out of 23 questions in the next round, which we felt was a pretty decent effort. This boosted our confidence and allowed us to do even better in the next rounds and we actually ended up coming in the first place! I also wanted to congratulate the other teams that participated from our school, everyone did a great job. Overall, it was a super fun day and I learnt a lot from it. I would for sure like to participate next year and would recommend trying out for anyone else who might be interested in days like this.

The moment I entered the zoom I was pumped and excited for the adventurous day ahead. When the number of people started rising then you can see the pressure but I was sure to just have fun. We had a range of different activities which included math games and problem solving. We even did a clue math puzzle at the end. I really think this helped my math knowledge.
