From the Assistant Principals

2022 School for Student Leadership

I am pleased to advise that six positions (three boys, three girls) have been secured at the School for Student Leadership for Term 4 2022 at the Snowy Campus.

The School for Student Leadership is a Victorian Department of Education and Training (DET) initiative offering a unique residential education experience for Year 9 students. This opportunity exists in addition to the Year 9 Camp.

The School for Student Leadership offers a fully residential program for one school term with accommodation for up to 45 students in a purpose-built facility. During their nine week stay, students will live and work in a very close environment with their peers. There are challenges and lessons on human relationships that will arise from this lifestyle. Great friendships are made, tolerance is learned and teamwork and leadership are created.

The unique program at the School for Student Leadership focuses on engaging students in activities which allow them to explore and learn about the local environment and cultures; both indigenous and non-indigenous. Gaining a sense of belonging in local places through knowledge and experience is a key learning outcome. Students spend a significant amount of time learning to survive and thrive in the alpine environment.

Interested Year 9 students will be asked to complete a written application, participate in a group task and speak with an interview panel.

Uniforms

Even though the end of the year is rapidly approaching, it remains important for all students to wear the correct uniform.

As we head into summer, the Glen Eira College design hats are an important item for students to have in their bags. Hats and caps of any other style will be confiscated by staff.

Nails must be of a reasonable length to participate in the curriculum safely.  Students who choose to have fake nails can only do so if they are short and of neutral colour. Long nails are a safety issue and will be addressed by year level coordinators. Makeup and coloured nail polish are not part of the uniform and must not be worn. Natural coloured foundation with SPF is the only permissible makeup.

Students should not wear jewellery to school other than a watch and a max of 2 pairs of studs or sleepers in the ears only.

Socks must be plain black with no logos and must cover the ankles.

A plain white t-shirt is permissible under the school shirt.  Any plain white t-shirt (i.e. no logos or designs) must be worn as an undershirt only and must not show below the sleeve or below the hemline.

Similarly, please be reminded that all shorts, dresses and skirts should be of an appropriate length - not shorter than 5cm above the knee. The college dress may only be worn with black socks.  The college skirt may be worn with either tights or black socks but not both.

2022 Student Leaders Camp

I am pleased to advise that Glen Eira College has been allocated a four day camp at 15 Mile Creek in April of 2022. This allocation is for up to 46 of our student leaders in Years 8-10.  Creating skilled, inspired and motivated leaders is the primary focus of the experience.

15 Mile Creek is part of the Outdoor School; a multi-campus P-12 residential school within the Victorian Department of Education and Training (DET).

During the camp, students will be encouraged to understand and discover leadership qualities within themselves and apply these characteristics to a team environment.  In addition, our leaders will be encouraged to explore aspects of human interactions, emotions and feelings; including empathy, self-efficacy and conflict resolution.  Our students will be particularly challenged to take an innovative and initiative based approach to their contribution to the team, striving to unearth characteristics of leadership within themselves.

We would appreciate the services of a small number of parents who might be qualified nurses (you do not need to be an immunisation nurse) to assist with vaccinating on the day. Please contact Nick Hamer-Smith at the college, if you are available.
