English in Remote Learning
Year 7
In Term 3, Year 7 students will begin their film analysis on the Disney film ‘Up’. They will begin by delving into how grief is explored through the main characters of Russell and Carl. In particular, students are learning how to respond to propositions; a statement that expresses an opinion.
Recently students needed to respond to the following proposition:
Ellie’s passing is a moment of celebration in the film where Carl celebrates her life and is able to move on from her passing.
Here is a sample of a student’s response below:
When Ellie passes away, Carl mourns her and struggles to put it behind him. This is quite clear when construction was going on around his house. Although the builders wanted to use his land, Carl refused to leave and instead told them he was staying until the day he died. This represents that while everyone is moving on (and building bigger things), Carl is still depressed about Ellie (by staying put). Therefore, Carl did not want to move on and continued to grieve a while after.

Year 8
Year 8 students have been given the opportunity to develop a study guide on a genre of their choice. The aim of this study guide is to provide the audience with an overview of the type of vocabulary, language features, characters, setting, and text structure that is used within that particular genre.
Here are some samples of the student’s work:
Shaelah Caruana created a study guide on the genre of adventure: https://www.canva.com/design/DAEpTlJzP8E/S33h9D5q4jGG7DPOiD0ciw/view?utm_content=DAEpTlJzP8E&utm_campaign=designshare&utm_medium=link&utm_source=publishsharelink
Anna Harper developed a study guide on the genre of mystery
Maddy Tuck chose to create a study guide on romance
Year 9
Our Year 9 students are currently finishing off their analysis on the Shakespearean play ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation. The assessment task for this unit involves students to respond to a discussion prompt such as the one below:
- Compare and contrast how the themes of love and hate are portrayed in Shakespeare’s and Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’.
Their next unit will involve analysing the film ‘The Truman Show.’
Year 10
The Year 10 students are finishing off their unit on comparing two set texts: ‘Night’ and ‘The Power of One’. Students have worked hard to develop resources that identify key character attributes and themes within both texts. As they have been working remotely, they have delved into a range of online formats that still allow them to work collaboratively such as Google documents. Please find below some samples of the work they have completed.
