2020 Work Experience

Work Experience 2020

We are making some important changes to our Careers Program in 2020 and have brought the week forward to Monday 15 June to Friday 19 June 2020. This is to coincide with the Careers Elective which all Year 10s will participate in during the Term Two electives. Term Two will be an exciting term for all things career wise including a visit to the Careers Expo and participating in our Careers Activity week - this year's inaugural week was very successful.

More about those activities in due course!

What is work experience?

Each year all of the Year 10 students are expected to participate in our Work Experience program, providing them with the valuable opportunity to:

  • develop employability skills
  • explore possible career options
  • understand employer expectations, and
  • increase their self-understanding,
  • maturity, independence and self-confidence.

What is involved?

Work Experience gives our students a taste of the world of work. It can involve observing and carrying out tasks nominated by a supervisor, or employer directly. It gives young people a chance to experience working life and helps them learn about what employers expect, what responsibilities people have and what skills are valued in the workplace, helping students to make informed decisions about subjects and future courses and pathway options; it can also help students learn how businesses work.

Below are some of our current Year 10 Work Experiences.

Where do they go?

Our students choose from a broad range of experiences including Hospitality, Advertising, Design, Health, Film, Animation and Visual FX,  Game Development, Veterinary practices,  Education, Galleries, Theatre, Landscaping, Fashion, Sales, Photography, Engineering and Medical Research to name a few.

We would love your help?

If you own a business or have friends and family who can help, we would welcome any offers of Work Experience amongst our community for Year 10 students. If you would like more information please email me at bronte.howell@preshil.vic.edu.au

Employer Register

Over the past few years we have put together a comprehensive Employer Register about the many diverse employers our students have experienced through their work experience placement.

Each employer, and Preshil student, are sent a Work Experience Evaluation survey to provide feedback about our students and the program. Once this survey is returned to the school, we document the relevant feedback and together these evaluations inform the ongoing development of the program and form an ongoing valuable resource for our students. This also includes whether the employer is happy to take more Preshil students. It is worth noting here that many of our students have been offered further work opportunities from their individual experiences.

The Employer Register is a valuable resource that you can access anytime by visiting the Careers Hub in the Cottage.  If you would like some help please come by the office or email me to make an appointment bronte.howell@preshil.vic.edu.au

Parent guide to Work Experience

It is an exciting time when your child first enters the world of work via Work Experience. There are several things you can do to assist with this:

  • encourage your child to have realistic expectations about the type of work they will be undertaking
  • Work Experience can be daunting for some students so please talk to your friends and family to see if there are opportunities within your own network
  • complete the Work Experience Arrangement form accurately and return it to the School promptly; both the employer and student will receive a copy and the School keeps the original
  • talk to your child about the importance of OHS and their responsibilities; they can complete a Safe@Work module here and receive a certificate on completion
  • talk to your child about work and careers; encourage them to consider as many options as possible.
  • If you own a business or have friends and family who can help others, we would welcome any offers of Work Experience amongst our community for Year 10 students. If you would like more information please email me at bronte.howell@preshil.vic.edu.au
