ICCES Hockey

The final days of last term saw a senior mixed hockey team travel to Shepparton to take part in the annual ICCES Winter Tour.  The competition began over twenty years ago and was then a boys’ hockey competition but in recent years several girls have taken part in varying teams.  Last year we entered both our women’s team and our men’s team and this year we decided to send a mixed squad of students who play in the Open competitions locally.

Our first game saw us uncertain and struggling to “gel” but it did not take the fourteen players long to develop some team work and to work effectively together.  Wins in the remaining Day 1 games saw us in second place and, on the Friday when the competition moves into finals, we remained undefeated although the Grand Final was a tense affair which went to a penalty shoot-out.

The team was extremely well led by the Captains of Hockey, Hannah Russell and Reagan Simons, who were our stand out players.  All players contributed at some stage but I must also mention our goalie Marcus Munro whose save late in the shoot-out gave us victory and saw him buried under a mob of excited team mates.

All fourteen young men and women were a delight to be away with.  We shared the trip with a basketball team and a netball team.  They were also fine ambassadors for the College.  All enjoyed an evening of ten-pin bowling on the Thursday evening, chatted easily at dinner that night (yes – they talked and were not buried in their screens!) and they showed genuine care and concern for each other.

It was a great way to finish the term.

Results of hockey games:

vs Bacchus Marsh GS - lost 2-3 (goals: Reagan Simons 2)

vs Goulburn Valley GS – won 2-0 (goals: Reagan Simons 2)

vs Bramar Coll – won 7-0 (goals: Reagan Simons 4, Hannah Russell, Lachlan Armstrong, Dougal Sweeney)

vs Girton GS – won 4-1 (goals: Dougal Sweeney 2, Reagan Simons, Will Merrin)

vs Girton GS (Qual Final) – won 2-1 (goals: Reagan Simons, Isaac Hocking)

vs Bacchus Marsh GS (Semi Final) – won 3-0 (goals: Reagan Simons 2, Lachlan Armstrong)

vs Bacchus Marsh GS (Grand Final) – drawn 2-2 (won on penalties 4-2) (goals: Reagan Simons, Dougal Sweeney.  Shoot-out goals: Reagan Simons, Isaac Hocking, Dougal Sweeney, Hannah Russell)

Under 16

College Gold played their scheduled match against Monivae on the first Saturday of the holidays.  The other two Under 16 teams had arranged an early fixture to avoid a holiday game.

Gold enjoyed a 9-2 victory with two goals from each of Jake Butcher, Isaac Hocking and Euan Sutherland and singles from Millie Howells, Lachie Rees and Micaela Meyer.  There were some fine passages of play, especially in the transition from defence to attack.  Euan Sutherland and Clancy Munro, both fresh from Central Australia, led the way, Jake Butcher was alert up forward, Isaac Hocking controlled the midfield and Hamish Jeffery made several fine saves in goal.   This team enters the competition recess in equal second place on the ladder.  Coleraine Black are the pace-setters but the three College teams are equal on points on the ladder just ahead of the second Coleraine team.  It is a good competition and there is much to play for the second half of the season when we resume.

Division 4

Along with the Captain of Hockey, Reagan Simons, I enjoyed the chance to umpire a Division 4 match at the start of the holidays.  This was a College vs College fixture – between the Tassie Devils and the Drop Bears – and we were both impressed by the skills and approach on display.  It was also impressive how many of the players came and shook our hands and thanked us for umpiring at the end of the match.  Coaches Stephen Nelson and Heath Templeton are obviously teaching their charges very well.

Play resumes for our teams on the first weekend of Term Three.

ICCES Netball

The senior girls’ netball team (Olivia Anagnostou, Kayla Sanders, Juliet Page, Eliza Jagger, Millie Austin, Lauren Richards, Alannah Sander, Louise Millear, Kate Millear, Kate Jessop and Anna Kelly) travelled to Shepparton hoping for a successful two days with plenty of talent in the side. The first day wasn’t as successful as hoped with the girls only coming away with one win out of our five games played. All of the girls, however, played with an outstanding amount of effort which was great to see. After a night of carb loading on pizza and pasta, the girls came out ready to play on the second day upsetting numerous teams to make it into the preliminary final. Unfortunately we weren’t able to hold on in that final going down by eight goals. All of the girls were a pleasure to coach and should be proud of the effort they put in both on and off the court.
