VCE Subject Selection

Our current Year 10 and 11 students have submitted their subject preference forms for 2020 and the next step is for each student to have an individual subject selection interview with our Head of Careers, Louise Manifold. This will involve discussions about the suitability of their preferred course in terms of their study and their future pathways. Parents will also receive an invitation to attend these meetings and we will send details about the interviews early next week.

Parent-Teacher-Student Interviews and Year 10 Morrisby Information

We held our Term 3 Parent-Teacher-Student Interviews on Monday evening, where our students had a chance to reflect on their performance in Semester One and to set some goals for the coming term. Studies of student learning have shown that self-reflection on specific tasks and their place within each subject is effective in helping students to improve the depth of their knowledge, identify gaps and deficiencies, personalise material and build connections between topics. These interviews offer a great opportunity for students to engage in this process.

We also held our Morrisby Information session for parents and current Year 10 students. Morrisby expert Barry Darnell from Career Analysts outlined the process involved in collecting data in the Morrisby testing and how the data can be used by students to help them make some decisions about VCE subjects, tertiary study and potential career paths.

Mr Darnell likened the process to that of profiling of sportspeople: given a particular set of attributes like leg length, weight and explosive power (amongst others), we can make a reasonable guess about the sports in which an athlete might excel. Similarly, the Morrisby testing helps to identify relative strengths in verbal, numerical, abstract, spatial and mechanical aptitudes. When combined with a student’s interests, specific vocational suggestions can be made.

Some parents had indicated on Care Monkey that they would like to have a printed copy of the student report provided. Unfortunately, this was not able to be provided on the evening and we apologise for the inconvenience.
