Swimming

The annual Inter House Swimming Carnival was held on Tuesday this week at the Hamilton Outdoor Pool. A full report on the day from the Swimming Captains will appear in this weeks newsletter. Students who qualify for the Glenelg Division (GD) Swimming Sports next Thursday 20th February at the Portland Swimming Complex have been notified and are expected to train on the Monday and Wednesday of next week from 4-5pm at the Hamilton Outdoor Pool. We also have a special lunchtime session at HILAC on Wednesday for full relay team practice. It would be great to see many family and friends make the trip down to Portland to support the team. Races begin at 10am and the conclusion will be approximately 2pm.

Basketball

The Junior and Senior teams have been released and advertised this week in readiness for the start of the season next week commencing Monday 17th February with under 14 and 16s. Students should contact their coach to work out training times and know when their games are on. Game times will also be advertised each week on the TEAM APP and Facebook page. New players needing basketball uniforms should go to the uniform shop today (Thursday) or Tuesday next week to sort this out and tell the ladies at the shop what team you are in.

Players who haven’t already will need to register and pay ASAP on the HBA website following the PLAY HQ link. If you have not done this as yet please do so today or tomorrow. To register, you will need to first create an account and then follow the steps to complete the registration process. This can be accessed at the links below. Students who are playing both Juniors and Seniors will need to register twice, once as a junior and once as a senior player but first contact the HBA to get a voucher if this is the case to save money. Players required to fill out juniors playing seniors indemnity forms should have these printed off and completed and returned ASAP also.

In 2020 our senior Men’s Division One coach Daniel Winnell will also take on a greater role in the development of all our junior players and coaches. He will be involved with all teams at various stages of the season to work on their skills and knowledge of the game.

House Swimming Report

House spirit was alive at this year’s College swimming sports day, setting the pace for a fantastic day in and out of the pool! In the pool PB’s were made, records were broken and competition was fierce. Notable individual highlights included Chloe Lyons winning the Female Aggregate and taking home the Fyfe Family Cup, closely followed by Lily Schroeder and Diamon Dickeson. A very deserving Lachlan Rees won the Male Aggregate for the second year running, taking home the Kerr Family Trophy with a perfect 128/128 points, closely followed by Fergus Roberts and Rafael Gaio.  Young House won the girls aggregate by 116 points over Laidlaw whilst the boys in Blue (Laidlaw) beat Young by 93 points to take out the Boys’ House Aggregate.

In the 50m backstroke Lachlan Rees broke the record for 15yr boys’ with a cracking time of 35.28, whilst new records were also set in both the boys’ and girls’ breaststroke, with Gabriel Marshall and Raphaela Serong recording times of 37.47 and 44.32 respectively.

In keeping with school tradition the Year 12’s dressed up in theme to signify their final House swimming carnival for their school career. Berry Year 12’s were menacing pirates dressed in red and wearing tutu’s that sent fear into their opponents and Laidlaw’s “Aussie bogans” strutted their stuff in footy shorts, singlets and black curly mullets bringing the true Aussie spirit to the poolside. Dressed for the job in their skimpy yellow crop tops, the Learmonth “Cheerleaders” rightly took home the Coxon/Campbell Cheering Cup once again. Whilst the Peter Pans and Tinkerbells of Young House astounded us with their fairy magic taking out the Grand House Aggregate by a spell bounding 223 points over Laidlaw.

Lunch time saw the competition heat up as the hotly contested parent, teacher, and student race was swam. With seven swimmers a piece the much-anticipated marathon event began with father – son rivalry between Jock and Nick Adamson battling it out for lead position. With students in the lead after Jock’s winning lap there were many lead changes throughout the race. Students and parents were neck and neck at the start of the final 50m lap with the father son duo of Malcolm and Jack Sharp battling it out for line honours. Despite Mal’s determined efforts, young gun and son, Jack came in first to win it for the students!

We would like to extend a huge thank you to the parents and friends who came along on the day to support the swimmers. A big thank you to Mr Alexander for organising the day, all the officials including timekeepers, Chief Referee - Mrs Kim Bright, Starter - Mrs Robyn Rees, the MC’s - Ms McGoon and Dr Hirst, and all the people who worked behind the scenes.

Congratulations to all those swimmers who are going on to represent College at Glenelg Division. We look forward to seeing you ALL in the pool at training over the coming week!

Ballarat and Wendouree Regatta: 2nd February

After starting the term on Wednesday, all the College rowers travelled to the Ballarat Wendouree Regatta on the 2nd February to compete in the first regatta of the season. Due to the blue green algae in Lake Hamilton rowers were unable to have a training session prior to this regatta, but rose to the challenge of new crews and some difficult weather conditions.

Both boys quads had a great day with the Junior Crew gaining more regatta experience in D Grade and the Senior Boys’ coming 4th place racing against seven other strong crews, in the C Grade Men’s division.

Throughout the day the female rowers showed great determination and attitude despite being placed in different crews for each race allowing the coaches to make adjustments in each crew. Each of the three girls’ crews raced really well, with two crews coming only 0.11 seconds apart. Towards the end of the day, two girl’s crews participated in an Under 17 2km race on the tough Ballarat course. The crew, consisting of Marni Covill, Jordyn Brown, Lucy Roberts, Grace Cowland and coxed by Bella Edgar, gained first place and received medals.

The efforts of all rowers throughout the day is to be greatly admired, but the success of the day is due to our coaches Simon Ross, Beanie Mould, Josh Frichot and Daker Pern. We also would like to give thanks to Georgia Williams for her contribution as well as Mrs Williams for taking the day off to put up with the noisy rowers while driving to Ballarat and home again.

A huge thank you to Dr Hirst, Head of Rowing, for his organisation for the day and enthusiastic contribution to the rowing program.
