The Importance of 'Hands On Learning' in Mathematics

Young children learn about their world through exploration, play and hands on experiences with objects. Manipulating objects can help children build visual images of mathematical ideas such as number, shape, pattern and size. By providing hands on opportunities we are preparing children to transfer this knowledge to more abstract mathematical concepts in later years.

Below are some examples of hands on learning in action at the Infants Campus.

"Mathematics is like ice cream, with more flavours than you can imagine, and if all your children ever do is text book Maths, that is like feeding them broccoli flavoured ice cream."  Denise Gaskins
