Book club - Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

We had our first virtual book club in the first week of Term 2 via Zoom, and it was so lovely to see the faces of the book club members after the longer holiday break. Before the social distancing began we had selected to read Little Women because we wanted to watch the recent film version (directed by Greta Gerwig) together when it became available to rent or buy. Unfortunately, we won’t get to watch it as a group but the plan is to watch it individually and we will discuss the adaptation during our next book club meeting.

Most of us enjoyed this classic text. Some of the discussion points revolved around the fact that it was considered a progressive text at the time, particularly Jo’s character, who is based on the author herself. Yet, in today’s society it is hard to see its progressive nature as the role of the mother, and daughters, is still very traditional by today’s standards.

For our next book club, we are deciding between the following novels:

The Glad Shout by Alice Robinson

Me Before You by Joyo Moyes

A Winter’s Promise by Christelle Dabos

If you would like to join us please email me at boy@brightonsc.vic.edu.au. Anyone is welcome: students, staff and parents.
