PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

From the Principal

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students and Friends,

As we reach the end of week two of this strange and unusual term, I wanted to thank all members of our community for the way they have stepped up to overcome the challenges presented by COVID19 and remote learning. The overwhelming majority of you have tried to embrace remote learning by adopting new ways of teaching and learning, as well as by practising kindness and consideration for others. Thank you.

To assist us to understand the effectiveness of our remote learning program, I ask that you complete the survey which was distributed, via Compass, on Wednesday. The information we collect from this will allow us to plan for adjustments to improve our delivery of learning into your homes.

To other matters, I can tell you that new College Council met last week and elected office bearers. This is the peak body within the school which represents parents, DET employees, and students. I am pleased to announce that Tania Madjaric-Grierson was elected President of the Council, with Asaf Harel as Vice-President, and LeeAnne Harris as Treasurer. Also, we welcomed new member, Joss Honour onto the Council. Please give all members of Council your support, and contact them using the collegecouncil@brightonsc.vic.edu.au address if you have ideas about school improvement, policy, planning, or governance. You may also visit the College Council page on our website, which is under the “Community” tab.

There are a number of sub-committees of College Council. These provide an opportunity for parents to take an active part in college life.

The sub-committees do important work that has a direct role in informing College Council decision making. The sub-committees are:

  1. Finance-this committee provides oversight and guidance on college financial procedures and policies
  2. Education Policy and Planning-this committee considers, and at times, formulates policies that guide college operations, along with assisting and providing guidance on college strategic and annual planning
  3. Buildings and Grounds-this committee oversights and provides guidance in forming priorities for maintenance and development works of the physical environment of the college

Most sub-committees meet monthly, usually prior to College Council meetings. Sub-committees are constituted annually, so we ask for members to serve 12 month terms. Membership to sub-committee is by approval of College Council.

So, if you have the interest or expertise to assist the college in any of these areas, please contact me at the school and I would be thrilled to be able to give you more information, or indeed, forward your offer to join to the College Council.

Finally, College Council has endorsed the Annual Report to the Community (2019), which has been submitted to the DET for their approval. It was very encouraging to see that, for the first time, our reported NAPLAN measures contained in the report was better than similar schools. This is a wonderful achievement and testimony to the hard work and commitment of our staff and students.

Please continue to stay safe during these challenging times.

Yours sincerely,

Richard Minack

Principal
