Humanities Update

Wow! What a busy term it has been for our Humanities students! Our team has been working really hard to provide lots of engaging opportunities for students and we have run activities like our Year 8 Mock Election for our 'Power to the People' unit; Year 7 business pitches for our 'Get Rich or Die Trying' unit and an incursion with a Wurundjeri Elder for our year 7 Torres Strait Islander Culture and People unit.

At year 8, our mock election tied in nicely to the actual election, with the Victorian Electoral Commission bringing out ballot booths and paper the week after the Federal Election. Students worked hard to develop their political parties in classes and develop their election campaigns. On the day they learned how votes are counted, how to vote and participated in the voting process. Congratulations to JD and Abdurahman and their teams for winning the mock election!

As part of our 'Get Rich or Die Trying' unit, year 7 students learned about entrepreneurs and how to develop your own start up. They then received a brief to develop a good or service for school to create a reward for our students. The year 7s were amazingly creative with these ideas, including things like a cupcake decorating day, a ball, a bbq, a movie day, a carnival, a fete, a footy colours day  and a crazy hair spray day. Overall we were very impressed with the quality of the presentations. Watch this space for the idea we decide to run!

Lastly, we were very lucky to have Uncle Bill from the Wurundjeri council to come out to speak to our year 7 students as part of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Culture and People unit. Uncle Bill shared his thoughts and feelings on Australian history and offered our students the opportunity to hear from an authentic perspective. We are very grateful to both Uncle Bill and Lendlease for organising this opportunity for us.

We hope all students enjoy a restful term 2 break! We are excited to start Geography with both year levels next term!
