Digital Technology

Term 1 - Binary Codes

Students have explored a variety of skills with a strong focus on binary codes and the development of software and games. The subject matches practical work with components of mathematical solutions, to understand binary codes and decode the numbers into letters of the alphabet (which will eventually decipher into a message or command). Using a Base x2 formula, the students were able to decode a 5-number binary code into a message and then design their own version of the board game ‘Operation’. They created a motherboard and designed their character with external elements such as bones and organs which was then linked and programmed with the software ‘Scratch’.

Term 2 - Digital Systems, Survey Data and Web Design

The students have explored the idea that computers are not solely just for games but have a major role in society. They had the opportunity to research and present their knowledge of internal and external components of a computer and discuss their findings in an oral presentation. This allowed them to fully comprehend the advancements in technology and how it works with other components to deliver the final commands. They had an opportunity to create a survey on an area of interest and develop data through Microsoft Excel. Students were able to update their skills in Excel by, formatting spreadsheets and designing a variety of graphs to highlight their findings. Lastly, students were able to develop their design skills with a functional website created via Wix. Students were to create a variety of page layouts and needed to describe the purpose of their website.
