Term 1 - Film Analysis

Students had the opportunity to view the film ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’. They studied both production and narrative elements and applied them to their film review via a digital platform (a podcast or an interview). Students were required to discuss the opening sequence, characters and setting of the film. They then applied these skills and analysed two scenes within the film. This included a discussion on a variety of production elements (shot sizes, camera angles, camera movements, audio, mise en scène, acting, lighting and editing). As partners, they needed to discuss their overall opinion of the film and compare it to the Netflix series.

Term 2 - Indigenous Representations in the AFL & Final Portfolio

Students also had the opportunity to learn about the Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander people and how they are represented in sport – specifically the AFL. We studied the impact of significant individuals such as Sir Doug Nicholls, Nicky Winmar and Michael Long and their impact on the AFL and the Dreamtime round.

They were required to complete their final portfolio which allowed the students flexibility with their submissions. Students could choose to create their own film; working in a small group they were required to create a script, shot list, prop list and location settings. Once completed, they were to film their production, edit and submit it. Or, students could design the new AFL Dreamtime jersey. They were to design two different jerseys of any AFL team of their choice, using the traditional symbols and elements that signify the Indigenous culture. Once completed, students were asked to complete a script of their pitch and present it via a podcast. They were to discuss the design process of the jersey’s and indicate specific elements that signify with the Indigenous culture.
