Murri News
By Helen Wenner - WWHS Aboriginal Education Officer
I’d just like to highlight some of the positive events that have happened at Wee Waa High School in Aboriginal Education during the year.
Aboriginal students from Stages 4 and 5 learnt the Acknowledgement to Country in language. These students offer the Acknowledgement to Country at the weekly whole-of-school assembly each Monday on a roster basis to ensure they all have the opportunity to practice. To each of these students, on behalf of the community and our Elders, I’d like to say 'thank you'.
My congratulations go to our two Aboriginal students who were elected by staff and peers as part of our 2020 students leadership team. Clifford Toomey was elected as boy captain and Georgia Smith as girl's Vice Captain. I am sure they will both do a great job.
I would like to let the Aboriginal families know that our students are working on repairing a mural that was created by Mr Norm Winters during NAIDOC week celebrations a few years ago. The mural is normally on display at the entrance to the school. I notified Norm of the weather damage and he was happy for the school to repair and rehang the mural. Thanks to my colleagues who worked with students to get this mural back into top condition. I'd also like to acknowledge Norm for letting the students work on the project.
I’d like to acknowledge the girls and Mr Vella for their participation in the Indigenous Song Birds group. I am so proud of them. They have showed a lot of commitment, strength and effort to perform in front of people. They performed at the school showcase night, Wee Waa Cotton Muster and they sang at our school's recent presentation night. The girls worked really hard to learn the song at a language workshop they attended in the middle of the year. I would like to thank Mr Vella for providing musical support. Without his help it wouldn’t happen.
Well done to my Aboriginal students that performed at Showcase & the Cotton Muster. L: R Helen (AEO), Nerida –Lee Hayne, Luana Manson Smith, Bianca Williams, Lillianne Manson Smith, Front: Teliah Croaker |
