Year 5 Report
Term 3 2021
What a crazy Term 3 we have had! The Grade 5's had a wonderful start to the term, before having to adapt to Remote Learning again. The students (and families) have done a great job connecting online through our morning Check-Ins and Master Classes. We have loved our morning Kahoot! quizzes to begin our day, with topics ranging from superheroes, to Disney characters, to maths topics and favourite book characters, just to name a few. The teachers have really enjoyed engaging with our students and creating opportunities online for them to connect with their peers. A highlight for the Grade 5 team was seeing all our students dressed up for our virtual Book Week Parade! Students looked incredible, with great thought put into their costumes to fit this years theme, 'Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds'.
This term our Literacy and Inquiry units have been closely linked as we explored Australia's History. Grade 5 students became historians, reading a variety of historical texts from the first British settlement in Australia through to Federation, discussing the impact these events had on the Aboriginal communities. We have read and viewed historical recounts about some key figures and events including, Captain Arthur Phillip, the explorers Burke and Wills and the bushranger Ned Kelly. Grade 5's have used their new knowledge of Australian History to write their own historical recounts. Students have developed their note taking skills in order to write their own historical recounts. Students have shared their learning in a variety of formats including FlipGrid videos, Sway and PowerPoint presentations and through actively contributing to classroom discussions. Miss Bianca, Ms. Lisa and Mr. Ly have all been so impressed with how much the Grade 5 students have learnt about Australia.
This term the Grade 5's have worked incredibly hard to further develop their multiplication and division understandings. Students have developed their mental maths skills through practicing a variety of strategies to improve their speed and accuracy. Students have explored the link between multiplication and division both at school and remotely; investigating factors, multiples and inverse relationships between the two. Students have also made links to 2D and 3D shapes, using formulas, their multiplicative thinking and investigating the area of shapes in the world around them.
The Grade 5 team,
