Welcome back everyone! Unfortunately, once again this newsletter greets you in the comfort of your own homes, as we are back in lockdown! We have of course, done this before and each time we get better and better at it! So many thanks to the students and the families for trying their best and putting a tremendous effort into their studies outside of the class during this tough time. We will get through this! This term there is lots to look forward to. The Grade 2 Sleepover will have to be postponed until further notice, we are hoping there will be a chance to hold this event later in the year, keep your eyes peeled for more updates!

Mathematics

During remote learning in Term 3, our students have been focusing on developing their multiplication and division skills. The students used strategies such as skip counting, repeated addition, arrays equal groups and equal sharing to help them solve multiplication and division equations and story problems. We are so impressed by how hard the students have been working, it's been wonderful to see the students progressing in their maths learning despite having to do it all from home. Here are some photos of some super star maths work that has been uploaded to teams from the grade 2's.

For the remainder of the term, we will be learning about statistics, and volume and capacity. As always, it is very important that the skills we teach in the classroom are continued at home. Activities such as counting home items using tallies, categorising them by shape, colour and size and sorting the data into tables and picture graphs are fun and easy ways to support their statistics learning from home.

English

During Term 3 in English, students have been exploring the text structure and language features of recount texts. Students have been writing their own personal recounts on various topics throughout the term. Students have also began learning about transactional writing. We are so proud to see students writing letters to their friends and family. In Reading, students have been focusing on developing their inferring skills. Students have been using clues from the text and their prior knowledge to make inferences.

Please continue to support your child's literacy skill development by reading to or with them each day or by providing them with access to books and audio books to further develop their accuracy and fluency.

Inquiry

Our Inquiry topic this term is Australia Then and Now

In this unit, we have been exploring:

  • What was life like for people in the past?
  • What aspects of the past can you see today? What do they tell us?
  • What remains of the past are important to the local community? Why?
  • How have changes in technology and toys shaped our daily lives?

Throughout the unit, we have explored changes over time in our daily lives, houses, schools technology and transport. When making comparisons to ‘Then and Now’, we created Venn Diagrams to demonstrate our knowledge of life then and now, as well as identifying elements that have not changed over time. We completed picture sorts where we sorted different aspects of our daily lives into ‘Then and Now’.

We also had the opportunity to use our creativity and become inventors. We invented different forms of technology and transport that we would like to see invented in the future to make our lives easier, for example if we had a flying car, travelling would be a lot quicker.

We were lucky enough to participate in an online Incursion run by the Melbourne Museum. The program, My Grandmother's Toybox unpacked the toys that have been passed down in Melbourne's history. It was an engaging experience and one the students were able to gain a lot of understanding from!
