Year 5/6 News

5/6 Poetry Study

Over the past few weeks, the Year 5/6 students have been studying poetry - its language, meaning, sound and rhythm.  They have been reading examples of different types of poetry and writing their own.

Virtual Excursion To Canberra

This week we went on a virtual excursion to Parliament House in Canberra with all the Year 5/6 students. We had to log onto the Parliament website and a man called Andrew gave us a guided tour.

The 5/6 students learnt that in the House Of Representatives there are ministers, political groups, journalists and reporters. On the main table in the middle of the room is a mace; on one end of it is a crown with engravings on it representing the Queen, who is the head of the states. When the Members of the House start working for the day, the mace is put on the table with the crown facing the Prime Minister.

We also learnt that despatch boxes were first used in the 17th century in Britain to transport parliamentary documents to the House of Commons. The Australian Parliament despatch boxes are replicas of the two boxes which sat in the House of Commons in the British parliament before being destroyed by a bomb explosion in 1941, during World War 2.

Andrew, the presenter, showed us many different things about Parliament House, including many facts we did not know about it. We found this presentation helpful as our trip to Canberra had to be cancelled this year and we have been learning about Australian government during this term.
