Year 9 students learn about VET options

Year 9 students interested in applying to undertake a VET course next year learned more about their options during a recent visit by GOTAFE's Laura Kilgour who is a Vet Delivered to Secondary Students Advisor. Laura spoke about specific course requirements and the application process. Our Year 9 students are well prepared after having had several information sessions held across terms 2 and 3.

Expressions of interest for these courses close on September 3 and students applying will also require a USI number. Students have been given all the relevant links to make this process as smooth as possible. If anyone requires any further information, please contact me at bgleeson@sackialla.catholic.edu.au

Cheers to ginger beer brewing task

Last week our Year 9 scientists started their own soft drink enterprise! Students engaged in the Science inquiry 'What is food made of and why?' through the lens of Chemistry. The Year 9s had a lot of fun brewing their ginger beer, as well as learning about how yeast can be used in a variety of ways in cooking!

To make your own ginger beer at home we have included the recipe below (results may vary!)

Materials

You will need:

¼ cup or 30g of sugar

¼ teaspoon or 2g of yeast

1 litre of filtered warm water

20mL to 30mL of Lemon juice

1 to 2 tablespoons (15g to 30g) of ground ginger

1 plastic soft drink bottle 1.25L

Method

Collect your materials as above.

Open the bottle and pour the warm water (around 30oC to 35oC) into the bottle, leaving enough room for the other ingredients.

Pour in the lemon juice, then add the sugar, then the ginger.

Screw the cap tightly onto the bottle and shake it very well, making sure the sugar is mostly dissolved.

Reopen the bottle, and add the yeast.

Screw the cap on again, and shake the bottle again.

Store the bottle somewhere warm for 24 hours; once the time is up squeeze the plastic bottle forcefully. If you can, dent it then let it sit a little longer until it resists your force.

Drink and enjoy! You might serve with a fresh lemon slice and ice.

Get involved in green-screen Book Week fun

The Book Week dress-up day on Friday, August 27, has been adapted due to COVID restrictions, but it will still be a lot of fun for our students! We won't be able to have our traditional Book Week parade, however students can dress up as their favourite book character, movie character, hero, sports star or something related to the Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds theme and have their photo taken in front of our green screen at the college. Our ICT Administrator Jamie Hatch will help bring the students' dress-up characters to life and the photos will be made into a video to share with the community. Learning Mentors will be dressing up too! Students who dress up will go into a draw for the chance to win a prize!
