French Focus

Bonjour à tous!

It’s hard to believe it’s almost the end of 2022!

Foundation Students

In term four, students learned the song ‘bébé requin’ – 'baby shark' in French. They developed knowledge of vocabulary related to family which features in this song i.e. papa, bébé, etc.  Students learned about some celebrations in France and Australia such as birthdays, Halloween and will learn about Noël (Christmas) in coming weeks.

Year 1&2 Students

Students developed their knowledge of ‘les vêtements’ (clothing) this term. They explored this vocabulary through tasks including songs, drama-based games and learning involving drawing and writing simple French.  They then designed and labelled their own fashion parade. Students will also be learning about Noël (Christmas) and why films and Christmas cards often depict winter scenes.

Year 3&4 Students

This term students learned vocabulary related to ‘la salle de classe’ – ‘the classroom’. They used cards to match the French to English and played games such as memory and snap. Students explored the fact that in French the word order of sentences is sometimes different to English e.g., le crayon bleu instead of the blue pencil. They then wrote full sentences in French and applied the word ‘et’ – ‘and’ in order to create compound sentences.

Year 5&6 Students

Students have been focusing on revision of French language fundamentals this term. They have been posing questions in French in order to participate in learning activities including drama-based tasks and card games e.g., ‘pêchez’ or ‘go fish’. In preparation for secondary school, students in year six also identified similarities between French and other Romance languages e.g., Italian and Spanish.

Alliance Française Berthe Mouchette Poetry Competition & Year 6 Celebration!

On Wednesday, 23rd November the French room was transformed into un café!

In total over 120 students in the school visited the French room to enjoy un croissant et un chocolat chaud (hot chocolate).

This was an opportunity for the following students:

  • Any Year 4 students who participated in the Alliance Française Berthe Mouchette Poetry Competition in 2022.
  • Any Year 5 students who participated in the Alliance Française Berthe Mouchette Poetry Competition in 2021.
  • All Year 6 students! Our lovely Year 6s didn’t have the opportunity to take part in the poetry competition due to lockdowns. It seemed a fitting way to celebrate with them and reflect on our time together.

Wishing you all ‘les bonnes vacances’.

See you in 2023!
