Year 5/6 Term 1 Overview
Year 5/6 Term One
Welcome back to the 2023 school year! It has been an exciting start to the year with our new teachers, Tracey Farrar, Allison Bayliss and Esther Wallis. Claire Lambert will be supporting Tracey and Allison in ther leadership roles every Wednesday. Our Learning Support Officers are Ruby Schneider, Kristin Sardellis and Lipo Li.
Religious Education
In Religious Education this term, we will be using scripture to help us unpack the meaning of gratitude from our Catholic faith. Together we will be looking at relevant parables and Bible stories from the New and Old Testaments, where the teachings of gratitude can be explored more deeply. Lent will commence our journey into Easter, where the focus will be on The Stations of the Cross, leading to Jesus’ crucifixion.
Inquiry
Our first term unit of Inquiry learning will have a health and well-being focus, where we will explore our diverse identities. Our students will be challenged with how they can look after and nurture their physical, mental and spiritual needs, drawing on community resources as well.
English
This term, the senior students will develop their reading comprehension, speaking, listening and writing skills based on the assessments carried out at the beginning of the year. During our reading rotations, students will be exposed to a variety of text types, to develop their comprehension strategies. They will have opportunities to discuss ideas and share their opinions about the text. The students will do this in teacher focus groups and through taking an in-depth look at our class novel. Students will also have access to Reading Eggs and other online activities, to practise and develop their new learning.
This term in writing, the senior students will be focusing on creating persuasive and fictional texts. During this time they will focus on developing the text structure of their writing and adding language features for emphasis. Students will write for a range of purposes and audiences. They will also work on spelling, vocabulary and punctuation skills.
Mathematics
In Mathematics this term students will consolidate their understanding of place value, fractions, addition and interpreting data.
Students will:
● Explore rounding decimal numbers and use estimation and tosolve number problems
● Use efficient mental and written strategies to solve addition andsubtraction problems, involving four and five digit numbers
● Pose questions and collect categorical or numerical data bymaking observations and completing surveys
● Construct displays with and without the use of digital technologies and describe and interpret different data sets in context.
Social Emotional Learning
This term in SEL our whole school focus is on Self Awareness. The students will explore the links between their emotions and behaviour. Students will learn to recognise and name different emotions in themselves and others, identifying the body language and facial expressions often displayed when you are feeling a certain way. They will name positive and negative emotions and discuss how these can have different effects on us.
Home Learning
Home learning will once again be given to students in the 5/6 area on a fortnightly basis beginning in week 4 of this term. We see home learning as a terrific opportunity for students to develop and improve in their organisation and time management skills and greatly appreciate family support with this.
