Year 3/4 Term 1 Overview
Year 3/4 Term One
Welcome to the beginning of the 2023 school year at St John's. A particularly warm welcome to Harshul in 3/4C and his family who are joining our school community this year.
Our 3/4 teaching team consists of Marisa Box, Naomi Ryan, Rhett Masters and Clorinda Maio. Our wonderful Learning Support Officers are Julie Carroll (3/4A), Kim Wilson-Hartick (3/4B) and Sherie Robertson (3/4C). Please remember that hats and sunscreen are to be worn in term 1 and there is a strict ‘No Hat No Play’ policy for all students in the school.
Religious Education
Students will learn how to incorporate gratitude into their lives and live through the example of Jesus. We will examine scripture through imaginative prayer and Godly play. Students will also explore the different types of prayer. This term students will delve deeper into the special events surrounding the seasons of Lent and Easter.
Mathematics
In Number and Algebra, we will be focusing on place value and the processes of addition and subtraction. We will then move to a focus on measurement, specifically in the area of time. To finish off the term students will look at 2D shapes and their associated properties. We will be using the pedagogical framework of launch, explore, summarise, in which students will be encouraged to be independent problem solvers and verbalise their thinking processes throughout each lesson.
English
Students will read, explore and write a range of text types including arguments, discussions and advertisements as part of our unit on persuasive texts. Students will learn the features of narrative text types and plan, draft and write their own entertaining narrative this term. Students will continue to develop their literal and inferential comprehension skills by reading and viewing a variety of stories and texts in small focus groups.
Social & Emotional Learning
Students will be immersed in the Berry Street program which centres on a healthy body and mind. Students will also participate in a weekly circle time where they will be given the opportunity to share their feelings and have teacher-led discussions to support their wellbeing.
Inquiry
Our focus this term for Inquiry will be ‘Diverse Identities’ surrounding Health and Wellbeing. Students will explore how to identify and practise healthy bodies and healthy minds. Students will also be identifying common practices that will support their overall wellbeing both at school and at home.
Physical Education
This term students will focus on the fundamental skills of throwing and catching, as well as participate in a variety of games with a focus on good sportsmanship and teamwork. Students will be involved in practising for the school Twilight Sports on Monday, 6 March. They will also have the opportunity to participate in the District Swimming competition on 1 March.
Homework
Homework will start in a few weeks so stay tuned for more information.
Specialists
Please see the timetable below for specialist lessons. Students will be required to wear their sport uniform on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Students will also need to bring in their library bag and books on Wednesdays.
