Hockey Report

Hockey Diocesan Day
Mater Dei continue to improve on our strength and experience among both our girls and boys Hockey teams. We started of the 2015 season with the Diocesan Day Hockey Carnival on Tuesday 24th March. Please see below a review of the day from two students/players Claire Arragon and Matthew Pike. We look forward to building on these performances at the Combined Wagga Wagga High Schools Competition in Term 3.

Girls Hockey
On the 24th March, the girl’s hockey team departed to play the opening competition of the year. We were all very excited to get out on the field and see if we could back up last year’s improvements and efforts against our rivals. After a quick warm-up we played Xavier High School, unfortunately we lost. We were disheartened at first but quickly regained the Mater Dei spirit and prepared to face Kildare. We conceded a goal to Kildare half way through the first half but fought back and managed to keep them out for the rest of the half. After an encouraging half time talk we went into the second half strong and for the majority managed to keep Kildare in a defensive position. All girls played extremely well and we can’t wait until the round robin competition later on in the year where we hope to be a much stronger and more improved team.

Boys Hockey
During the Diocesan Hockey day the boys played very well and worked together as if they had been playing together for years. The games were hard but we did great to have the scores that we did considering the skills shown by the opposing teams. The team displayed sportsmanship throughout the entire day and every game. We acted with respect towards everyone, displayed the Mater Dei spirit and made our school very proud. Although some students have never played or may be inexperienced, each player for Mater Dei played exceptionally well and helped to either score or defend. This year’s team is the strongest and most skilled team that Mater Dei has had for a while and we look forward to being strong contenders in the Combined Wagga High Schools competition in Term 3.
