Sports news

Happy 2022 and welcome back to St Mary's College! It's a brand new year and we look forward to all the sports and carnivals we have on offer again.

At St Mary's, we encourage all students to get involved in a cocurricular sport throughout the year and the best part is, no previous experience is required! It's all about having a go, being active and making lasting memories with your friends.

Not only is sport a great way to get out and about, it also imparts some very important lessons about team work, respect, resilience and humility, which underpin our Presentation values.

Term 1 sport and carnival information is outlined below. Please contact us if you have any enquiries by phone (03) 6108 2560 or email.

Senior School

After-school sport

St Mary's College is a member of the Sports Association of Tasmanian Independent Schools (SATIS), which coordinates sporting competitions for member schools across Tasmania.

SATIS promotes physical, emotional and social wellbeing by fostering and administering a quality sporting programme providing competition between schools in an environment which encourages participation, diversity, integrity and sportsmanship.

This term, we have a range of different sports on offer, with pretty much something for everyone from soccer, cricket, volleyball to 1st grade basketball.

The various sports and when they are played are listed in the table below. All sports will kick off in Week 3. Games start at 4.15pm and will be played around various grounds and school gyms in Hobart.

If you're interested in signing up, complete the online registration form here

We are also offering free training sessions in the lead up to the carnival, held at the Aquatic Centre on the following days:

  • This Friday 11 February (6.45am-7.45am)
  • Next Tuesday 15 February (6.45am-7.45am)

These sessions are open to anyone keen to come along and work on your starts and finishes, and sharpen your skills. There will be a bus to take you back to school at 8.15am.

Junior School

After-school sport

Much like the Senior School, the Junior School is a member of the Junior Southern Sports Association of Tasmanian Independent Schools (JSSATIS) and is also part of the Southern Tasmania Catholic Primary School Sport Association (STCPSSA).

Both associations coordinate varied competitions for southern primary schools. STCPSSA sports and carnivals are generally organised during school time, as are JSSATIS carnivals.

All JSSATIS sports are:

  • Played after-school (games start by 4.00pm) at various school grounds around Hobart.
  • Playing in a JSSATIS sports roster is free of charge.
  • Parents are responsible for transport to and from games.

On occasion, if sports are not offered through JSSATIS or STCPSSA we enter teams in independent rosters. There is a fee for these sports.

Our term 1 sport registrations are now open.

Junior Swimming Carnival

Our Years 3-6 students will travel by bus to participate in our annual junior swimming carnival tomorrow (Thursday 10 February).

Unfortunately, due to venue capacity restrictions still in place, there will be no spectators at this carnival.

The swimming carnival is all about participation, fun and earning points for the much coveted House and spirit shields, with all skills and capabilities catered for (from 50m races to novelty). With this in mind, it is hoped that all students will participate.

Full sport uniform is to be worn by all students to and from the carnival. Students are to compete in one-piece bathers (no bikinis) and a swimming cap, preferably in House colour (goggles are optional). Further information was sent to families via Consent2Go.

Rowing update

Our SMC rowers have kicked off racing for the year at the Schools Regatta #2 held at Lake Barrington last weekend.

The girls exhibited great determination and spirit, both on and off the water, and their efforts produced some outstanding results.

Congratulations to all rowers, coaches and parents for a great start to the second half of the rowing reason.
