Science Report

We finished the year with some much missed practical investigation work in Science.

We saw Year 7 students building and testing parachute delivery systems for their Jelly Baby test subjects. Students tested different parachute designs to maximise the chances of the Jelly Baby surviving a fall from the mezzanine level of the Gymnasium.

Year 8 students participated in an eye dissection to examine the structure of the eye and were able to observe some of the differences in Bovine eyes compared with human ones.

Carefully students were able to extract the lens intact and examine how similar the flexible lens is to a solid one they might be familiar with.

Year 9 digital coding students completed their 'Trashbot Challenge' where they had to build and test a “Trashbot” that used an Arduino board to control the opening and closing of a rubbish bin. The bin had to detect the proximity of rubbish and used Google’s free AI to determine whether it was the correct type of rubbish. The challenge was conducted in conjunction with KIOSC who provided prizes for the most inventive Trashbot ideas. Mitchell Steenhuis and Harrison Matthews were judged winners for the 2021 challenge.
