VISUAL ARTS
Message from Visual Arts
Visiting artist workshops have been a strong focus in Term One for the Visual Art students, giving students insight into contemporary art practices. The Year 11 class has been painting en plein air each week in the Royal Botanic Gardens with artist Mia Schoen. They have also been developing skills in ceramic techniques with artist Kenny Pittock, with the resulting works contributing to a three-dimensional mural within VCASS.
The Year 12 class completed a fabric and text-based workshop with artist Sarah CrowEST, in which they developed a variety of wearable fabric works. Soon they will begin a jewellery and silver casting workshop with Claire McArdle.
Additionally, all students have been participating in a printmaking workshop with artist Trent Walter, at Monash University Museum of Art in Caulfield.
The relay space exhibition window in the VCASS library has featured a rotating display of student works, and will continue to showcase Year 11 and 12 works throughout the year.
In Term Two, the Year 11 students will be experimenting with generative art with the artist collective Tangere and will undertake a photography workshop with photographer Rudi Williams. The Year 12 students will be focusing on refining and resolving their personal artworks for their first VCE deadline.
Top Arts Update
We are pleased to announce that Lily Bettess and Eve Selsick have been included in the NGV's Annual Top Arts exhibition.
For 28 years, the NGV’s annual Top Arts exhibition has celebrated the artistic dynamism and creative vitality of young Victorians. Showcasing the exceptional work of students who have completed VCE Art or Studio Arts in 2021, the exhibition highlights the resilience and creativity of young artists, who have used art and design to explore and understand the world around them.
Comprising work selected from applicants across Victoria, the exhibition encompasses a range of media, including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, digital and mixed media. The exhibition includes reflections on identity, time, home, social issues and our connection to the natural world.
This year’s exhibitors were selected based on key criteria including conceptual development, technical excellence, aesthetic considerations, awareness of past and contemporary art practices, individuality and innovation.
This exhibition highlights the NGV’s strong commitment to arts education, as well as its role as a platform for young people to express their diverse ideas, attitudes and beliefs.
