Science

Term 4 is all about Earth Science and Sustainability. Spring has sprung and we have started to grow some vegetables in our school veggie patch. At the whole school assembly in week 2, members of the Green Team were selling bags of radishes and lettuce for a gold coin donation, with all proceeds going back into producing more vegetables. Keep an eye out for more yummy produce at our next assembly or some “worm wee” from our spectacular worm farms, which is a great fertilizer for your garden!

The Science “Inventor’s Competition” is currently running and all entries are due by Wednesday 15th November. The purpose of this competition is to make something out of trash, which is often called “Upcycling” and many great ideas can be found on google and pinterest. Reusing old materials saves them from becoming landfill and helps our furry friend the Eastern Barred Bandicoot which is a local endangered species. One way to help this animal thrive is to create a clean habitat for it to live in. Hopefully by promoting “upcycling” rather than recycling or throwing things in the rubbish bin, we can make a small difference. Students can take photos or videos of their invention and upload it to seesaw in the folder called “Inventor’s Competition.” Alternatively they can bring their invention to Vanessa in the Science room. Winners will be announced and awarded at Assembly on Friday 17th November.

Reducing our energy use is a key priority at TSPS which we take seriously and try our best to manage. Energy monitors have been nominated in some communities and they are making sure that lights, TV’s and other electrical devices are off during lunchtime and after school. Members of the Green Team are currently doing “Energy Audits” where they bring a checklist to each community and check to see which one is the most energy efficient. The Green Team will be announcing the “Super Duper energy Saver” community at the next whole school assembly in week 4. The competition is tough so far, with 4 communities on the same number of points.

The Green team have made a fabulous video about energy saving to inspire our school community, which can be found on seesaw and the TSPS Facebook. They are also working on producing a water saving video with summer fast approaching.
