World Record Attempt
If you thought for a minute that Big Science didn’t come to a small place like Griffith, you would be incorrect.
Marian Catholic College was fortunate enough to be part of the recent World Record Attempt organised by ANU and the ABC for the Most People Stargazing Across Various Locations. Over 130 locations were set up by Scout Groups, Guide Groups, Observatories and local community organisations.
Our contribution was organised by our STEM Coordinator/Science Teacher, Dr Elijah Marshall, a total of 34 people braved the cold, drank coffee provided by Bella Vista Tours, enjoyed the night sky and spent 10 minutes admiring the Moon. A large range of telescopes was brought out for the occasion, ranging from the large to the very small. Dr Marshall also provided some quick tune-ups for people who weren’t sure how to get the best out of their instruments. Approximately 40,000 people contributed to the record Australia-wide, easily eclipsing the existing record of 7,960 people across 32 locations.
After Professor Brian Cox and Julia Zemiro had completed the countdown for our 10-minute viewing of the Moon, some commemorative photos were taken to celebrate Marian Catholic College’s contribution to Citizen Science in Australia.
Based on the enthusiasm for astronomy at Marian, we are seriously considering a regular star party.
