National Reconciliation Week

27 May-3 June

As we pray for Reconciliation may we remember that May 27 and June 3 are important dates in Australia’s history. May 27 marks the anniversary of the 1967 referendum when Australians voted to remove clauses in the Australian Constitution that discriminated against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. June 3 marks the historic 1992 Mabo decision in which the High Court of Australia recognised native title—the recognition that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights over their lands did survive British colonisation.

Holy Father, God of Love You are the Creator of this land and all good things. We acknowledge the pain and shame of our history And the suffering of our peoples.

Holy Father, God of Love We thank you for the survival of Indigenous cultures Our hope is in you because your son Jesus Christ came to reconcile the world to you.

Holy Father, God of Love Teach us to respect all cultures. Help us to bring about spiritual and social change

Amen

Marian Celebrates Year of Youth

Our week has been filled with joyous activity as we sung, danced and prayed together, especially last Tuesday when internationally acclaimed musician John Angotti performed his Christian music with our musicians. The one hour show was interspersed with presentations and reflections from some of our Year 10 and 11 students who participated in the Year of Youth Festival which was held at Borambola Camp last week. The show was live-streamed and can be viewed on our Facebook page and website. One of the highlights amongst many was the “release of the Marian Catholic College school song, written by John Angotti and our own Mr Hillam. It was received with great enthusiasm and once learnt will be sung as often as we can from now on! It is also on the live stream.

Another great moment this week has been the transition program for all Year 6 students coming to Marian in 2019. The transition program has been widened to include Government school students and has been well received. Year 6  students spent time with HSIE and Science teachers. In each lesson, the emphasis was in identifying certain skills of inquiry, analysis, inferencing and experimentation.

Rebranding of Wagga Wagga Catholic Education. Our Diocesan Office will now be known as Catholic Education, Diocese of Wagga Wagga. There will be more said about this but simply put, the emphasis is on Catholic Education not as it was formally known as Catholic Schools Office, Diocese of Wagga Wagga. It may sound like a subtle change but it puts Catholic Education first and not just an “Office”. More about this at a later date.

Congratulations to teachers, Mrs and Mr Morris on the safe arrival of Edith May Morris. Born on Monday. Mum and bub and dad are doing fine!

Staff Professional Learning Day Friday, June 8 The College will be closed on the Friday before the June long weekend as staff will be holding our annual Spirituality Day. This year we welcome representatives of our Founders, Marist Schools Australia and the Sisters of Mercy. This means that students will have a four day long weekend.

Please be aware that the College office will be closed also for the day so that all staff may attend.

Peace and Best Wishes
