Year 7 Social

Last Thursday night our Year 7 cohort headed down to Melville Superbowl for the 2019 Social. This was a wonderful night for everyone with the pins falling free (aided somewhat by raising the gutter guards), plenty of food and most importantly of all fun.  The students enjoyed the opportunity to see each other outside of the school context and to have conversations with people from each of the Houses. It was particularly pleasing to hear the venue staff comment on positive manners and behaviour they observed in our students. A big thank you goes out to the teaching staff who attended and parents who came out on a weeknight to make this happen.

PE Studies Gala Day

One hundred and twenty students from six schools participated in the 2019 PE Studies Gala Day on Tuesday 10 September. Held at the College, the Gala Day gave the Year 12 PE Studies ATAR students an opportunity to complete a mock practical exam in their chosen sport in preparation for their external WACE practical examinations in October.

With all 10 sports available it was a large logistical exercise; however, it was a fantastic chance for the students to be assessed in a realistic environment, receive quality feedback from examiners and develop friendships across schools.

RUOK Day - 12 September

Thursday 12 September is R U OK? Day – a day when we’re reminded to ask, “Are you OK?” and to remember every day of the year to support people who may be struggling with life’s ups and downs.

At John XXIII College, we know that regular meaningful conversations can make a difference. And you don’t have to be an expert to ask how someone’s going. Just a great mate and a good listener.

In support of this year's R U OK?Day we’re shining a light on the times we should be asking our friends and loved ones this important question. We want everyone in our school community to know that if something’s up with someone you know – if there’s something going on in their life or you notice a change in what they’re doing or saying – it’s time to trust that gut instinct and ask them “Are you OK?”

To spread this message, we ran a series of activities in homeroom, at recess and lunch for students and staff.

R U OK? is a national charity dedicated to inspiring all of us to have regular, meaningful conversations to support anyone struggling.

You can learn more about the signs and how to ask R U OK? at www.ruok.org.au.

Years 7 and 9 NAPLAN

Please note the College has received the Years 7 and 9 NAPLAN reports and these will be posted to the home address. If you have not received your child’s NAPLAN report by the end of next week please contact the College. The College will now undertake an analysis of the data to ensure we are focusing our teaching and learning programs and hence providing the optimum learning environments for our students.

Contemporary Learning Spaces

Four of our Secondary classrooms have been fit-out with new furniture this week. The furniture enables teachers to have greater flexibility with the layout of the room as well as providing additional opportunities for more varied teaching and learning strategies. Both the teachers and students are excited by the opportunity this presents for them to engage with the knowledge and skills in the educational program in a modern learning environment. These rooms will be used by a variety of students and teachers to trial various new types of classroom furniture across several Learning Areas.
