People across the globe share that one of the most important things that make them feel fulfilled is GIVING. Giving is intrinsic to all cultures. When you truly want to give and expect nothing in return, it leaves you feeling energized, fulfilled and as if you gained something too. You’ve heard the saying, ‘it is better to give than to receive.’ In a child’s eyes that may be difficult but when you get them involved you can teach them many things including… that giving doesn’t have to be monumental or all about money (Michelle Rothfus, Project Coordinator Abōd® Shelter)

Next Wednesday, the Community Action Team will be visiting homerooms to launch their final activity for the year; our Vinnies Christmas hampers.

Each homeroom will be given a basket to collect items donated from the list below. Together as a school community we brighten the lives of over 30 families at Christmas time. Many people feel the impact of financial stress around Christmas or due to the breakdown of family relationships may feel isolated and alone, so appreciate a gift of kindness; at what could otherwise be a sad time. Family meals provide an opportunity for family members to come together, strengthen ties and build better relationships. They build a sense of belonging which leads to better self esteem unfortunately not everyone is so fortunate.

Baskets will be in the homerooms until 4th December when they will be collected and decorated in preparation for our end of year Mass.

The importance of sharing a meal was realized by students in Mr Neville’s Work Studies class recently when they ventured out into the Griffith community and asked for support selling tickets in Carevan’s major fundraising activity for the year; their mega raffle. The funds raised go directly towards this vital community service. The small group of students were a credit to the school and their families, raising several hundred dollars and are to be congratulated for their enthusiasm and commitment.

The students had also researched the service and became familiar with their philosophy and discovered that Carevan is so much more than providing a hot meal. “Food is the ingredient that brings us together to share what is essential in life” Originating in the Albury/ Wodonga area, this statement extracted directly from the Carevan website reinforces the significance of sharing a meal. Carevan has become an icon, demonstrating that a community; through a strong volunteer network, works together to ensure all people feel valued and respected regardless of their circumstances. “The Carevan Foundation aims to create a sense of identity, a sense of belonging and a sense of achievement. Whether you are dealing with poverty, mental health, homelessness, isolation, family breakdowns; Carevan values you and respects your circumstances and forms a non-judgemental environment.”

We are so extremely lucky to live in a community where people, young and old are so generous and feel it is their mission to help others.   Have a wonderful weekend, stay safe and let’s hope we are fortunate enough to receive some precious rain this weekend………………..forever optimistic xx
