Year 12 ATAR Examinations

Our Year 12 students have begun their final ATAR examinations . Exams are being held in the Thomas More Exhibition Centre (TMEC) in the morning and afternoon. The ATAR examinations continue until 21 November.

If using the carpark in front of the TMEC for after school pick-up please be courteous of the students completing examinations. The afternoon examinations begin at 2:00pm and so any noise after school should be minimised to provide our students with the best possible environment to maximise their achievement in these final examinations.

I would ask for everyone’s support with this matter.

2018 French Exchange – Host Families Wanted

The College looks forward to welcoming our international exchange group from our sister school Notre Dame de Sion in France. In 2018, we have 16 students arriving at the start of the school year. The students will arrive on Thursday, 15 February and leave on Wednesday, 1 March 2018.

We would like to invite your family to host one of our exchange students for two weeks. The French Exchange Programme provides our students with the opportunity to connect with people from other cultures and to make lasting friendships.

The Exchange Programme could not continue without the wonderful support of our host families. Many of the past exchange students have written that their most enjoyable experience is spending time sharing everyday family life and being involved in activities around the home.

Host students will also be awarded community service hours in 2018.

Merci beaucoup

ACC Letters

Congratulations to Sophie Durrant. Sophie was awarded her ACC Letters in the thirteenth round of qualification following the 2017 Athletics carnivals. To achieve letters a student has to be selected in the ACC All Star team for Swimming, Cross Country or Athletics for at least four years. Well done Sophie.

Chamber Of Commerce And Industry Youth Hackathon

On Monday 30 October, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of WA (CCIWA) alongside the Political and Legal Educators Association of WA (PLEAWA) invited a select group of Year 10 Civics and Citizenship students to attend the 2017 Youth Hackathon. Those chosen to represent John XXIII College included: Cullen Binet, Dara Fournier, Rory Hewson, Charlie Richards, Sashi Tandon and Olivia Torre.

The Hackathon is a State forum for students to brainstorm ideas in response to issues facing youth today. The event served as a challenging enrichment and extension program for students particularly gifted and talented within the area of politics and law. Students were placed into groups with students from other schools, to problem-solve issues and learn how to pitch and present ideas.

Students presented their findings to the Minister of Youth, The Hon. Peter Tinley. All groups were commended on the creative and articulate nature of their ideas – however, there could only be one winner. Congratulations to Charlie Richards and Cullen Binet who, along with two students from Wesley College and Chisholm Catholic College, won the award for Best Pitch.

The Minister praised the students on their brave choice of topic – Teen Pregnancy. “I was impressed with their pitch and the difficult questions they posed…They weren’t afraid to challenge the system – to question the status quo…Their passion for change and for making a difference shone through”.

The Minister has since written to the school to congratulate Charlie and Cullen on their win and to invite them and members of the winning team to lunch at Parliament House later this month.

We congratulate all the students on their impressive work!
