Valedictory

The Valedictory Committee have been going full steam ahead in planning our Celebration Day and graduation ceremony evening. Tables have been ordered so that students can enjoy a lovely breakfast whilst enjoying fun acts and games put on by teachers and other peers. A vote was cast on our the Year 12 Facebook page and the theme that was chosen for our Celebration Day was ‘Space’. Please note that the Celebration Day is on the 25th of October followed by the graduation ceremony later on in the evening. Students are then invited to an optional sleep-over at the school as a way to celebrate their journey together through Year 7 up until now.

Senior School Sports

On the 29th of May, our senior students headed out and participated in their respected sports. We had four teams go out on the day which included a senior-girls and senior-boys basketball team and a senior-girls and senior-boys table tennis team.

Both basketball teams travelled to the Frankston Basketball Stadium for the day as they both faced off against all the other schools. The senior boys team did extremely well throughout the day beating every school they came up against, which resulted in them being awarded the title of Northern Peninsula Champions and going onto the next stage. The senior girls also did quite well, coming away with two wins. From all reports, the girls showed great sportsmanship and teamwork, which is was pleasing.

The senior girls and boy table tennis teams both travelled to Keysborough’s Table Tennis Centre where they faced the opposing schools.

Unfortunately for both teams, there was only one school for both the senior girls and senior boys. The senior boys came up against Frankston High, where overall they lost, but the boys were able to pick up a few wins in the singles and doubles matches. The senior girls were successful and did not drop a match through their singles and  double matches, which resulted them being awarded the Northern Peninsula Champions and going through to the next stage.

The senior girls netball team competed on a separate day and they travelled to the Jubilee Park netball courts for the day. Unfortunately, the girls did not win any games throughout the day, but from reports they all enjoyed the day and represented the school with great sportsmanship.

Performance Review

On Tuesday June 13th all senior captains were required to undertake performance review to discuss their achievements for the first semester. The reviews all went well and have given an indication as to the improvements made on our school and what needs to still be achieved in order to make improvements to our school. All senior leaders are now working towards achieving their goals for the 2nd semester in order to make our school a better place.

ABCN Focus - Women in Leadership

Throughout the term 10 Year 11 female students attended the ABCN Focus -  Women in Leadership workshops at United Energy Australia.

Focus involved students working in small groups, along with students from Cranbourne East SC with female executives who acted as role models and mentors. The aim was to support young women to develop their leadership skills and aspire to senior roles in business and the community – to improve achievement and foster a sense of self-belief that will encourage students to aim high and have confidence in their leadership abilities.

The 3 sessions included an introduction to leadership styles, realising strengths and creating a leadership picture.

ABCN Aspirations is a program designed to familiarise secondary students with a modern workplace and equip them with the skills to get there. Aspirations focuses on Year 11 as this is the critical stage for students in determining what type of further education they will pursue or whether they will continue with school at all. The program enable students to engage in the workplace. Working in teams the sessions include interview techniques, understanding strengths and developing essential employability skills such as communication and problem solving. The program was explained to Year 11 VCE students at study space last week. Due to the days it may be difficult for VCAL students to attend. Students have been asked to give an expression of interest to Mrs Andrews.

TIS

On Friday  23rd June Year 12 VCE students attended a TIS (Tertiary Information Service) workshop at Monash Peninsula. TIS is a co-operative venture between Federal Government subsidised Victorian universities, institutes of TAFE and other related agencies.

The TIS seminar and expo session provided an opportunity for Year 12 students to research their tertiary study options; discuss careers and course content with tertiary representatives and collect course information from all the major Victorian universities and local TAFE institutes. It was a unique opportunity for students to gather first hand information from the wide range of tertiary providers in attendance.

TRAG

On Monday 26th June, Year 12 VCE students attended a TRAG (Teenagers Road Accident Group) presentation at Mornington Community Theatre.  TRAG have been providing road trauma presentations to Secondary Colleges on and around the Mornington Peninsula since 1999, and is acknowledged as an integral part of the local resources to reduce incidences of road trauma in the 15 – 25 age group, the most vulnerable age group in our community.

Today's session began with quite a graphic video of a triple fatality.

Carl a Paramedic from Ambulance Victoria then spoke about an accident that he attended where the driver fell asleep at the wheel and died, he had the responsibility of looking after the passenger who had suffered a brain injury.

Priscilla from the SES then spoke about her experience of attending an accident near the College  where a young girl drove into a tree, and her expeiences about the impact on family and community and the emergency workers.

Grant from Crime Investigation Unit  spoke about current road toll and the impact on the families.

Danielle spoke about the impact on the family of her brother dying in a road accident.

Lachlan then spoke about being in a car with a young person he did not know, when 7 boys hopped in a car. Four were dropped off, the remaining 3 then headed  off, a police car saw them and the driver took off at speeds of 180km. and then lost control and rolled 5 times. He gave a heart wrenching talk about how his life changed from a 16 year old who had a promising career ahead of him on the professional golf circuit, to what he has endured,  to get him walking ageain and recovering from over 50 broken bones.

After the presentation the comments from the group included How powerful the message was and that they could not believe how emotional Danielle and Lachlan were, and the impact that 10 years down the track it is still so real to them both.

On Monday 22nd May 2017, Year 11 students visited two social enterprises as a part of Year 11 Business Management Course and Education Week. The students visited ‘The Collingwood Children’s Farm’ and ‘STREAT’ , which are two respective social enterprises that have been created to resolve vocational and educational needs for disadvantaged youth and young adults and are primarily staffed by volunteers from the greater community. During the visits, the students were given insight into how the organisations run, gained funding, mission and visions for the organisation (how they plan to continue to support the greater community) and how they have been able to continue to make such a large impact for thousands of people over the past 40 years collectively. All the students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and we are very grateful for the organisations who graciously gave up their time to meet with us. We look forward to continuing the relationship with these wonderful organisations in the future at McClelland College.

GAT

On Wednesday 14th June all students undertaking a unit 3/4 sequence of studies sat the General Achievement Test (GAT). The first of the VCCA externally assessed exams for 2017. The next formal period of externally assessed exams begins with English on November 1st and finishes on 22nd November.

In preparation for these exams, a reminder that there will be compulsory exams conducted the first four days of the 2nd week of September school holidays for all students completing a scored VCE 2017 for unit 3/4 studies. (2nd October to 5th October). This allows for students to consolidate their learning and to seek feedback in time for the final end of year exams.

VCE Music Showcase

On the 1st of June, the Music Department held a showcase for their VCE Music class consisting of a few Unit 1 and one Unit 3 students altogether with different talents and instruments. I was there to view the latest and greatest talents of the up and coming music stars of tomorrow in the classroom where the “stage” was set (it was in the classroom because the PAC was taken for practise exams) and I was one of the performers and the only Unit 3 that brought a guitar, an amp and a guitar lead. The performances were assessed by the VCE teacher as an assessment task and it started at 3:30pm and ended at around 4:30pm.

The audience included the most of the students in the VCE class and the teachers Dan Gordon and Mr Budd. We contributed feedback to each other after every performance with the positives and possible improvements. Overall, everybody did a good job on the night and let’s bring on the next performance.
