PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

End of Term 2

As we come to the end of another very busy and eventful term, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all students and staff on their efforts. Term 2 has included many events such as the Athletics Day, countless excursions, Year 10 work placement, camps, Student Progress Meetings, Cross Country and Senior Exams (just to name a few). On the last day of term, parents, guardians and students have access to their semester 1 reports through compass and this should provide further evidence of their growth this semester. I would encourage families to read through this report together and discuss your child’s areas of strengths and weaknesses.

Congratulations

Over the past term, a number of opportunities for growth of our staff has occurred. This has resulted in the following staff taking these opportunities and some leave from the college.

  • Hannah McDermott – Hannah will take on a secondment role for Term 3 at the Department of Education as part of the Pathways at DET Pilot Program.
  • Daniel Rogers – Daniel has been appointed an Acting Assistant Principal at Lyndhurst Secondary College for Term 3 and 4 this year.
  • Todd Slater – Todd was successful in his application for moving to the Victorian International School in Sharjah beginning in Week 3 of Term 3.

Each of these experiences have allowed a number of our other leaders within the college to step up. Including:

  • Matt Dawson – appointed Acting Leading Teacher - Year 8
  • Kate Collins – appointed Acting Leading Teacher – Year 11

Andrew Harms – appointed Acting Assistant Principal

Congratulations to all of the staff above.

Explicit Instructional Model

The image you see before you is that of the McClelland College Explicit Instructional Model. (EIM) This is a model that guides teachers in the best way to teach their lessons to achieve maximum results for students. The centre of the EIM model depicts the structure of the lesson and the outer rings are high impact teaching strategies that are needed to progress the lesson and facilitate student learning and engagement.

We are on a journey as a College to improve our teaching and learning. At McClelland, we’ve long been known for our innovation in education and in order to continue to be at the cutting edge and delivering the best opportunities for our students, we know that we need to keep learning ourselves and continue refining our practice. We have partnered with The University of Melbourne Network of Schools (UMNOS), the work of which was featured in recent ABC television program, Revolution Schools. The partnership allows us to network with other leading government, independent and private schools in Victoria, and also the opportunity to meet and learn from leading, internationally renowned academics, including John Hattie and Patrick Griffin.

This semester McClelland teachers have been working on identifying high impact teaching strategies and have learned about creating and delivering Learning Intentions and various strategies for Checking for Understanding. More information about teacher professional development and its implications for your child’s learning and improvement will be explained in COG editions to come.

Have a restful and safe break.
