Year 8 Tennis

Over the last few weeks all Year 8 classes have been playing tennis. In the double periods they have been going out of the school and to the tennis court behind the school in the park. They have been learning types of hits that tennis players use such as the forehand and the backhand swing. In the single periods they have been working on the skills they have learned in the double periods.

On the tennis court outside, they have been lucky enough to be taught by one of the tennis club leaders; Graham. He has been teaching students in small groups to enhance their learning by paying attention to only a small group instead of everyone at once. While Graham is teaching the small groups the other students are playing games of tennis or activities in groups of four or five practising tennis moves or techniques.

Olympic Change Maker Forum

Hi everyone my name is Cherry Teddu and I am in Year 10. Last week on 4th September Bridie Skinner (Year 11) and I were selected by the school to go to the Olympic Committee’s Olympic Change-Maker Forum. This program outlined how students show change and how they demonstrate leadership within the community. The program was located at Victoria University in Footscray. It was a day well spent with among 140 students around Victoria.

Throughout the day we met a few Olympians across various sports and had a Q&A with Steve Hooker. The forum encouraged us to be motivated and not to give up on anything that you are ambitious about. “To be a change, show a change.” Thank you to the school for letting Bridie and I have this amazing experience.

All School Athletics GEC Boys Results

On Wednesday 4th September, Zac, Cameron, Jay and William represented GEC at the All School Track Relay Championship at Lakeside Stadium in Under 16 boy 4 by 100m relay. Forty teams entered the competition and the GEC team got the 11th best time with a personnal best time of 48.77s. This result is very good knowing that these students are 13 and 14 years old  and competing with 15 years old students.

Also their great teamwork and motivation in training  paid off on 12th September during the 2019 Victorian Coles Nitro School Challenge.

These 4 same boys with Liam and Seif (Year 7) placed 2nd overall out of 27 junior teams (Years 7 & 8), got silver medals and qualified for Nationals.

Congratulations to the GEC boys team who has proudly and amazingly represented the school by entering for the first time into these 2 competitions!
