Sun Safe Presentation
We were very fortunate to have Mr Matthew Kean, Principal of Holy Spirit School, Lavington, visit the College last week. Mr Kean is currently on the road delivering his Sun Safe/Melanoma presentation to a number of schools across our Diocese, and spoke with our Year Nine students about his personal journey with melanoma.
Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Adolescence and childhood are critical periods during which sun exposure is likely to contribute to skin cancer later in life. It is estimated that more than 75% of all skin cancers could be prevented by practising sun protection in childhood and adolescence. Our sincere thanks to Mr Kean once again for visiting Mater Dei, and for his commitment to increasing student and whole-system awareness of skin cancer and other damage caused by exposure to UV radiation.
For more information about understanding UV radiation, please visit The Cancer Council SunSmart website.
The SunSmart UV Alert shows the sun protection times required for your local area across NSW as well as the maximum UV levels for the day.
You might also like to add the SunSmart App to your Smartphone. Search for the SunSmart app on your Smartphone to check the UV Alert daily, set sunscreen reminders and track your vitamin D intake.
All students and staff are reminded that hats are to be worn during break times and PDHPE practical lessons. College bucket hats are available from the College Uniform Shop for $10.00. Year 12 families, you are welcome to donate any unwanted uniforms to the Uniform Shop for families to purchase at a reduced price.
