Virtual Tour

UYSC Transition Day

The Grade 5/6 students had a wonderful time visiting Upper Yarra Secondary College today. They enjoyed a fun Drama session, as well as a STEAM session, where they got to experience Virtual Reality and play around with robots’

Cultural Studies

The grade 4-6 students have been learning

about Aboriginal culture in Cultural Studies this term. We have looked at the Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Australian flags and discussed what country means to the ATSI people. We’ve compared and contrasted ‘Welcome to Country’ and ‘Acknowledgement of Country’ and each grade brainstormed ideas for their own class acknowledgement. We took ideas from each other to create a shared acknowledgement. Below are photos of the ‘Acknowledgement of Country’ for 4/5C, 4/5H & 6F. You should all be very proud of how well you brainstormed and worked as a grade to create such incredible displays. The acknowledgements will be displayed near each classroom, the main office and in the Cultural Studies/LOTE room.

Lost Property

Lost property is easy for us to assist with if clearly named. When items are handed in to the office we first check if it is named. If named it is not lost and will be returned to the child via the teacher. We are finding lots of items that are unnamed turning up at the office. Plastic food containers and drink bottles are very common items, often still containing food and we end up having to dispose of them. There is also  many small toys and balls. Brand new uniform without names also turn up and are often not collected.

Harmony Day is represented by an orange ribbon , and participants are encouraged to wear orange due to connotations of social communication, freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. Australia prides itself on being a multi-cultural society, with figures showing that nearly half of all Australians were born overseas, with the country seeing a high volume of migration every year. On top of this, more than 70 Indigenous languages are spoken in Australia and it has a very rich tribal heritage.

The continuing message of Harmony Day is 'Everybody Belongs' and its annual observance aims to encourage inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural background, and celebrate core Australian values. Harmony Day is celebrated annually on 21 March in Australia. Harmony Day began in 1999, coinciding with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

It is celebrated with many community festivals and local events with global food and music and traditional dress.
